CLEANING THE CROWN
THREE MONTHS’ WORK LONDON, April G. The King’s Imperial Crown, worn on State occasions, has just spent three months in the hands of the cleaners, and now looks more splendid than ever. It has also been made one inch taller. Experts cleaned and reset the 3000 jewels, including five rubies, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, more than 1000 brilliants and rose diamonds, and 273 pearls. Sir George Younghusband, Keeper of the Crown Jewels, said that the height had been increased because of the necessity of reconstructing the gold framework, made for Queen Victoria in 1838. This had sunk until it was so insecure that it was uncertain whether the Crown would keep its shape when worn.
