ECONOMY COMMISSION’S PROPOSAL STRONG PROTEST FROM SOUTHLAND. (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, March 23. A resolution —“That this meeting of representatives of the Southland and Wallace County Councils and the Southland Motor Association strongly protests against the recommendations of the Economy Commission in connection with the Main Highways Board and its funds ” —was carried at a conference this morning, The chairman (Mr D. J. Wesney) expressed the view that the proposal to reduce the effectiveness of the Highways Board was a national calamity, and the general view of the meeting was that the board had done excellent work.
