MAN’S GALLANT RESCUE

PERILOUS QUICKSANDS. A heroic young man and a brave little girl of nine have had a terrible experience in the quicksands off the Lancashire coast.

The little girl, carrying her baby sister, was wandering over the seashore at Seaforth, near Liverpool, when she found her feet and legs sinking. She had walked into the treacherous quicksands so prevalent in this neighbourhood. Fortunately some young men were playing football not. far away, and one, Janies Bolan, ran to the rescue. The little girl had by this time sunk lower, but she still clutched desperately her baby sister. Bolan had a difficult task before he could drag out the children, and ho was not successful himself until lie had himself sunk up to the thighs. James Bolan is a real hero, for no more terrifying experience can ho imagined than that which he so courageously dared. Readers of Scott will recall the closing passages of his “ Bride of Laniniennoor,” when the Master of Rnvcnswood rides to his doom in the quicksands, one of the most moving descriptions in English literature.
