OTAGO ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the Otago Hockey Association was held last evening in the Y.M.C.A. buildings. Mr E. H. Calder presided. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the chairman said .it was pleasing to know that the association was in a very sound position. Although the credit balance was less than, last year, the association’s assets had increased slightly. This showed that the executive had exercised the utmost care in the control of the association’s affairs. Such careful control was necessary during the present depression, and it was hoped that the executive would receive , the whole-hearted suppot-t of the clubs during the coming year. The past season had been very successful. The competitions were well contested, particularly the senior competition; which created great interest, as the result was in doubt up to the close of the contest. The second grade teams had also provided very good games. It was very gratifying to know that the executive had been able to arrange more than the usual number of representative matches last year. It was pleasing to know that Southland and North Otago were again playing hockey. One of the greatest pleasures associated with his position as president last season was to welcome the Southland team to Dunedin. It was hoped that the game would continue to prosper in Southland, and the executive looked forward to Otago teams playing , matches with Southland and North Otago teams in the future. It was hoped that Canterbury would send a strong representative team to Dunedin during the coming season. Referring to the game in the primary schools, the chairman said it was the association’s duly to foster hockey in the schools as much as possible. The difficulty in the past had been to find coaches, and it was hoped that the executive would give every consideration to the matter and try to secure coaches for the schoolboys. There was no reason why the Otago boys should not be coached to such a standard that they would give the Canterbury boys a dose game. In connection with the proposed tour of an, Indian team, the difficulty last year had been one of finance. That difficulty might have been overcome but for the trouble in the Far East. The negotiations, when well advanced, fell through. There was a possibility of an Indian team competing at the Olympic Games, and it was hoped that arrangements would be made for the team later to play representative games in New Zealand. The association was very much indebted to the executive for its work during the past year. Special mention should be made of Mr A. J. Hinton, who was chairman of the executive. The bulk of the work fell on his shoulders. The motion was seconded by Mr Hinton, who said the past season had been a very successful one. Mr H. F. Payton also spoke to the report. He urged the association to pay close attention'to the coaching of schoolboys. The motion was carried.
