A British Official Wireless message from Rugby states that the newlyappointed United States Ambassador in London (Mr Andrew Mellon) will reach England in the middle o£ March. An apology was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Clutha County Council from Cr Harris, who is at present in hospital, and it was decided to write expressing the hope for his speedy recovery. Mr Maurice Ralph, South Island manager for Messrs J. C. Williamson, Ltd., is at present in Dunedin, making preliminary arrangements for the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company’s season, which will be opened on Easter Saturday. Dr B. G. D. Dunne, -who has been acting as locum tenens at Timaru for Dr W. E. Fea for the last 12 months, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. Dr Dunne, who was formerly a well-known Otago Rugby representative, will leave for England next month to continue his studies. In recognition of past services to band associations throughout . New Zealand, the following were elected life members at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Bands’ Association in Wellington:— Dr H. T. J. Thacker, Captain T. Herd, Lieutenant W. V. Siddal. Messrs J. Crichton, W. S. King, W. Jupp, and M. Cohen. Reference was made by the chairman (Cr T. Maginness) at yesterday’s meeting of the Clutha County Council to the death of Cr E. King, which occurred recently. He had not been long a member of the council, said the chairman, but during most of his life he had x taken a prominent part in public affairs: He had been a man of high standing in the district, a capable farmer, and his word had been respected at the council table. They were pleased to welcome Mr King’s son, Mr A. Vi King, to the council as member for the Clydevale riding. The following minute was adopted, members standing in silence:—“That this council places on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the late Cr King to the council and ratepayers during the time he occupied the position of councillor for the Clydevale riding, and expresses its very deep regret at the loss of a respected colleague and councillor,” Cr King made a suitable reply.
