A STATE LOTTERY

DEMORALISATION OF CHARITY METHODIST CHURCH’S PROTEST. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 2G. An emphatic protest against the institution of a State lottery in New Zealand was made by the Methodist Conference to-day when a discussion took place on the moral aspect of art unions. The following was the resolution passed:— “ This conference emphatically urges the Government and Parliament to withstand the proposal for a State lottery, of which notice has been given by a private member. It declares that charitable causes and education would be illserved if such worthy ends were supported by demoralising means, and, further, that a large body of public opinion would be seriously affronted if the proposal were received in any other way than with righteous indignation.”
