UNEMPLOYMENT

MAYOR’S RELIEF DEPOT , In stating that the Mayor's Relief Depot will be opened in St. Andrew street on Monday week, the Mayor (Mr R. S. Black) said yesterday that he considered it would take at least £SOOO to tide over the situation in regard to the relief of distress during the coming winter. Mr Black said that last year the amount expended on the relief of. distress was £3500, and in addition ICOO sheep had been brought from Wellington free of charge, while the pound-a-week scheme had also assisted greatly. He urged upon the people of Dunedin the need to assist all those who were passing through times of stress. The Mayoress was at present busy organising the pound-a-week scheme. Messrs M'Skimming and Son, Ltd., consigned to the Mayor’s Relief Depot three barrels containing three gross of jam jars, and the Mayor asks that those; who are willing to fill these jars for distribution to the unemployed during the winter should obtain them as soon as possible. MORAY PLACE REST ROOM The Moray Place Rost Room has remained open throughout the summer, as the need for it has not diminished. The practical assistance of the men using it in raising £l9 has helped to supply the financial side. In response to an appeal by the Rev. Albert Mead, the sum of £2 has been received, and the sympathetic help of “ A Wcllwisher ” is gratefully acknowledged. It is hoped that financial assistance will ,be forthcoming to help to keep the doors of this room open during the coming winter. Any gifts of money will be thankfully received by the Rev. A. Mead, 4 View street, Moray place. An appeal is made for playing cards, any games and good reading matter, and writing materials. These can be sent to the rest room any day between 10 and 5, and will be thankfully received.

It is anticipated that lectures will be arranged after Easter in order to fill the. minds of the men and help them to think of other things than their present unfortunate circumstances. TREE PLANTING The Reserves Committee will report as follows to the meeting of the City Council on Wednesday night:— Advice has been received from the Commissioner of Unemployment that the State Forest Service has a considerable surplus of tree stocks and that supplies from such surplus will be made available to local bodies as the Unemployment Board directs. The trees are offered on payment of lifting, packing, and freightcharges only and on the condition that the local bodies concerned organise a programme for the utilisation of unemployed labour in preparing the ground and planting the trees. It is believed that it will he possible to take advantage of this offer, and instructions have accordingly been given for an order of 250,000 pinus ponderosa seedlings. Proposals for utilising relief labour in connection with the scheme are being prepared by the superintendent of reserves and will be dealt with at the earliest possible date.
