MEAT FOR WINTER MONTHS A meeting, for the purpose of discussing the question of securing supplies of meat for distribution amongst those in need during the winter months, was held at Kurow on Tuesday night. Mr J. M'Phail presided over a large gathering of residents. It wae decided to hold a eheep drive from the head of the Haka Valley to Otekaike. The following were appointed to canvass their respective localities: —Messrs W. M'Kenzie, L. Pavletich, B. H. Wilkinson, A. Sutton, James Chapman, A. H. Chapman, jun., W. G. JlTKinnon ( and W. T. Smith. The question of canvassing the Omarama district Tvas left in the hands of Mr Charles Robertson, who is at present in this district organising on behalf of the Oamaru Heat Committee It is hoped that there ■will be a ready response and that large iupplies of killable sheep will be forthcoming, and so, assist those in hardship during the winter months. LATE MR E. P. LEE The Mayor (Mr J. M. Forrester) at oie meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council last night referred to the death of Mr E. P. Lee, stating that Mr Lee had Jong been associated with public matters, not only local but national. He had played an outstanding part in the political arena, and he had been associated_ with the Borough Council. In his capacity as a member of Parliament and a Minister of the Crown he had always been most helpful. As. a Minister he had gained a national reputation. Mr Lee had brought to the performance of his duties a great deal of commonsense and a highlytrained legal mind. He would be remembered as a statesman rather than as a politician, -for he thought of the next generation rather than the next election, Above all, he was a good > loser, and scorned all adventitious aids in conducting his political campaigns, earning ihe respect of all parties; •• , A minute of appreciation of Mr Lees cervices to,the town was recorded,, and a motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs 'Lee in her loss. OAMARU MUNICIPAL BAND The. news of the success of the Oamaru Municipal Band, under Conductor H. Pheldung, for the second time in the B Grade at a New Zealand band contest, was naturally • received with great pleaeure by the supporters of the band in Oamaru. The band will return' from the north by the express to-morrow. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night the Mayor (Mr J. M. Forrester") expressed pleasure at the success Of the Municipal Band at the contest. On behalf of the citizens he congratm late*d the ,band. Mr R. Milligan stated that the band’s performance was very creditable indeed and all the citizens were very pleased.- The town clerk was directed to write conveying the council’s congratulations to the band. OVERSEAS SHIPPING The National Mortgage and Agency Company, agents for the Shaw, Savill fteamer Mairooa, report that the vessel is due at Oamaru direct from London in ballast on March 22. The Maimoa will load 10,000 freight carcasses for west of England ports and general cargo for London. AUCTIONEERS’ LICENSE FEE Further correspondence in connection with the payment of the auctioneers license fee paid by the National Mortgage and Agency Company was received by the Oamaru Borough Council last night, the Department of Internal Affairs advising that as the amount had not been refunded the Treasury had been

.asked to deduct the amount involved from the next payment to be made to the Borough Council. The Treasury wrote that the Department of Internal Affairs advised that the clerk of the court, Oamaru, was under a misapprehension concerning the place of business of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, and incorrectly advised the department that the Oamaru Borough Council was the local authority to receive the fee paid by the company. After making certain inquiries, continued the letter from the Treasury, it was ascertained that the Waitaki County Council had been properly nominated to receive the fee, and the council was asked to refund the amount to the department in order that the necessary adjustment might be made. The Treasury had been advised that the borough had declined to do so, and, therefore, the amount, £3B 10s, would be deducted from the next payment to be made to the borough. A further letter was received from the department and the matter was deferred pending advice from the Municipal Association. REBEKAH LODGE Sis. MThail, N.G., presided over a well-attended meeting of Rose of Oamaru Rebekah Lodge. Two candidates were initiated into the Order and one candidate was proposed for membership. Fraternal greetings were received from Grand Warden Bro. Clarke, of Timaru, and also from the Star of Canterbury, Ridgely, and Washington Lodges. It was decided to challenge the Alfred Lodge to a debate. A pleasant social hour was then spent by members. PERSONAL A large gathering of senior young men and women of Columba Church met to bid farewell to Mr D. Findlay, jun., who is shortly leaving for London, at a social evening in the Columba Hall on Wednesday night. Mr H. Sotting presided, and fames were indulged an by those present, luring an interval Mr Betting presented Mr Findlay with an attache in recognition of the fine work he had done m connection with the church. Mr Findlay had taken the greatest interest in the welfare of the various departments oi the church, and his loss would be greatly felt. Several other members also spoke of the sterling qualities of the guest of honour, and all joined in wishing Mr Findlay every success for the future. POLICE COURT At a sitting of the Oamaru Police Court yesterday morning, ‘before Mr W. S. Crombie, J.P., John Otto Rankin, alias Otto Reinkie, was convicted of drunkenness and- ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. _ He wag ordered to leave Oamatu forthwith, j OAMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council was held last night; present —the Mayor (Mr J. M. Forrester), and Crs Milligan. Cooney, Jenkins, Baiu, Kirkness, Colquhoun, Wilson, Crawshaw, Butterfield, Marshall, Familton and Tait. The caretaker’s application for renovating the residence at Papakoio was referred to the Waterworks Committee. An application from the North_ Otago Irrigation Committee for a contribution towards the preliminary expenses was deferred till the next meeting. The Gardens Croquet Club requested permission to erect a shelter at the Gardens similar in design to that recently erected in the children’s playground. —Permission- was granted, approval of the design being left to the Mayor and Cr Wilson. The Unemployment Board advised that a considerable surplus of tree stocks might be available after the_ department’s programme had been provided for and would be offered to local bodies on payment of lifting, packing, and freight charges only.—Referred to the Reserves Committee. • \ The Regimental Band was granted permission to give a broadcast concert at the Opera House on March 20. A report by the borough inspector on the alleged use of water during restricted hours was referred to the Waterworks Committee. The site in Thames street suggested by the chief postmaster for a public telephone booth was rejected. It was decided to request the postmaster to remove the booth at the corner of Thames and Coquet streets further down Coquet street. The Finance Committee reported the following balances:—D.F. account, cr. £2919 7s Id; loan account, cr., £335 10s 4d. Accounts amounting to £526 Is Id were passed for payment. Mr S. Dick again applied for a rebate of rates, but the Finance Committee reported that the circumstances regarding the property had not altered, and recommended that the application be declined. —Adopted. The manager of the Majestic Theatre was granted permission to show pictures at the theatre on Good Friday. # _ Mr M. E. MThee was granted an irrigation supply at Peebles at the schedule ra Tlie Works Committee recommended that the concrete culvert in Thames highway be continued to Frome street. — Adopted. , , , Mr A. A. Stock’s request on behalf of horse drivers, that the sides of roads be not tar sealed, was referred to the chairman of the Works Committee. Mr T. Garstang’s request for improvements to the road off Chelmer street was referred to the foreman for attention, but the Works Committee could not recommend providing an additional street lamp in that locality in the meantime. The Works Committee recommended that Mr F. J. Williams be asked to meet the committee to discuss the question of extending the overflow pipe from the liquefying tanks. —Adopted. I Arising out of a petition from 22 ratepayers, the Works Committee recommended that the cleaning of the creek which flows through blocks 25. 43, 54, and 66 be done by unemployed labour, provided the owners of the properties indemnify the council against any damage. —Adopted. , , , The foreman was asked to report on the question of raising the bridge in Ain street, but the Works Committee did not recommend that the bridge in Reed street be raised in the meantime.— Adopted. Formal consent was given to the granting of a right-of-way at section 5. block IV. The Reserves Committee could not recommend that the council undertake the care of the Awamoa Croquet Clubs lawns. —Adopted. . The question of having the electric light poles in the Gardens replaced was left with the chairman of reserves. The Reserves Committee recommended that the Salvation Army Band be granted permission to give a concert in the Gardens on March 27. —Adopted. Mr F. J. Williams forwarded plan and specifications for the proposed duplication of the high-pressure reservoir.—Referred to the Works Committee.

NORTH END OUTFALL DRAIN. Speaking on the proposed continuation of the concrete culvert in Thames Highway to Frome street, Cr Crawshaw stated that if the work were continued at the same rate the drain would cost £4OO less Than the original estimate. PIRATA LADIES’ HOCKEY CLUB The fifth annual meeting of the Pirata Ladies’ Hockey Club was held last night. Mr A. C. Kay presided over a large' gathering of members. The report and balance sheet, which showed a creditable balance, were adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: —Patron, Dr Orbell; president, Mr A. C. Kay; senior vice-president, Mr N. H Colquhoun; honorary vice-presi-dents—Miss Willetts, Messrs H. E. Wedde, H. M'Diarrnid, W. Brown J. Giffin, J. Cagney, S. Easton, J. M. Forrester, and D. Crombie; secretary and treasurer. Miss M. Dwyer; assistant secretary, Miss R. Clare; club captain, Miss E. Bedford; deputy captain. Miss K, Weavers; manager-coach,- Mr H. Thomas; chaperon, Mrs Wilson; committee—Mi&ses Lowan, E. Bedford, and W. Berry; Selection Committee —Mr H. Thomas and Miss E. Bedford; delegates to North Otago Ladies’ Hockey Association, Messrs Thomas and L. Blair. Seven new members were elected. The opening day was fixed for Saturday, April 2. It was decided that the subscription be 3s for players and 2s for schoolgirls.
