AN UNCONFIRMED REPORT
AEROPLANE STATED TO HAVE CRASHED (Feb United Pkess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 25. An unconfirmed report last evening stated that an aeroplane had been seen flying over Banks Peninsula, and had crashed in the gully below the Hilltop Hotel. Searchers were unable to find any trace of a machine or pilot. Squadron-leader Findlay (of the W igram Aerodrome) states that all air force machines and the private planes usually kept there are accounted for. The police are still investigating. Mr G. Pelby, proprietor of the Hilltop Hotel, says that smoke was observed early this morning rising from the bush nearly three miles below the Hilltop, in the, valley where the first story indicated the plane to have crashed. The search parties have resumed operations. Later reports discount the possibility of a plane being down on Banks Peninsula. Searchers have found nothing.
