TWO PRISONERS ESCAPE

DASH MADE FROM CAMP ..THEFT OF A MOTOR CAR. An escape from the Hautu Prison Camp, near Tokaauu, was made by two prisoners, Augustine William Sullivan and Edgar William Allen, early on Sunday morning (reports the New Zealand Herald). The men stole a motor car at Tmangi, about two miles from the camp, and are believed to be travelling toward Auckland. They were last seen at 6 o’clock on Sunday morning going through Taupo. The prisoners broke from their cells at about 4 o’clock in the morning. The alarm was given about two hours later, and a strong body of warders set out in pursuit. By this time the fugitives had reached Turangi and were travelling in a car belonging to Mr R. E. Cuthbertson, which they stole from outside his house. The men were seen in the car at Taupo. Advice of the escape was received by the Auckland police. All stations between Auckland and Taupo were advised and a watch was being kept on the main thoroughfares. No trace of the car or the men had been found at an early hour on Monday morning. Sullivan was serving a sentence of two years’ reformative detention for receiving stolen goods. When he was being escorted to Auckland for trial last May, he made a sensational escape from the Main Trunk express at Franktori Junction. Shortly after the train left Frankton Sullivan was given permission by the escorting constable to go on to the carriage platform. As soon as he reached the platform he threw himself off the train, which was travelling at a fairly fast speed. Immediate pursuit was impossible, but Sullivan was recaptured shortly afterward.

He has a fresh complexion, dark brown hair and blue eyes, and has a scar on the right cheek. He was serving a sentence of five years’ imprisonment for breaking and entering at Auckland.
