THE Y.W.C.A.
HOSTEL AND CAFETERIA . In the city, as in every other city, the Y.W.C.A. stands as the agency which concerns itself with every side of a girl’s life —her health, her home, her friends, and her growth in all the things that make life full of meaning. To the girls whose work necessitates her living away from her own home the Y.W.C.A. has a special meaning, and in these days when girls earn their livelihood alongside the men a place with a home atmosphere and influence, with ample facilities for recreation, entertainment, personal sewing, and laundry, is an essential. Such accommodation the Y.W.C.A. Hostel offers to all women and girls. There is also the cafeteria, which is a bright and spacious room, where groups of girls gather daily between 12 and 2 o’clock to enjoy their mid-day meal. Here they can secure hot, home-made dishes, or cold dainties with salads, while others bring their own sandwich lunches and supplement with hot soup or drinks. Good food is served in true cafeteria style in the minimum amount of time—without waiting or delay—at cost price. After lunch a lounge with papers and magazines, a cosy Are and writing table, a place to talk with friends or to sit quietly and read, await all who care to avail themselves of these comforts. These are two only of the many departments of the busy Y.W.C.A. round of opportunities which are all founded on the ideal of Christian living. The all-round development of girls is promoted through sports, camps, conferences, classes, clubs, and recreation.
In group and club life, a girl finds occupation and recreation that promotes the finest standards of conduct, and stimulates her desire to train and prove herself a true citizen.
'The Y.W.C.A. buildings with all their equipment are the gifts of the citizens to the girls and women of this city, and as such are available for all as far as their capacity allows. To those seeking employment they have been of great service. During the last two and a-half months over 200 girls and women have been registered, and 100 placed. The protection and guidance, the training and inspiration of young people are vitally necessary to the life of the community, and who would hesitate to invest money in the welfare of its youth? An appeal is being made jto the public to-morrow for funds to enable the association to prosecute efficiently the work which it has undertaken.
