BOWLING

FIXTURES February 27. —Dunedin Centre v. South Otago Centre, at Dunedin. February 27.—Final of Four-rink Championship, Kaikorai green, at 2.30 p.m. March 3. —Christchurch Centre v. Dunedin Centre, at Dunedin. March 12 and 14.—Singles Champion of Champions. REPRESENTATIVE GAME The annual match between Otago and Southland was played at Invercargill yesterday, and the Dunedin-South Otago fixture (an eight-rink game) will be played on the Duendin Club’s green on Saturday. THE PUBLIC SERVICE The prevailing depression affects many sections of the community and its unwelcome presence is felt by sports bodies and clubs. The public service tournament is an annual fixture that has always been keenly looked forward to by the members of the various branches or the service, but this year it has been deemed advisable to postpone the tournament until brighter times are with us once more. In order to compensate the players for the loss of their annual game the tournament secretary has approached the Dunedin Club with the hope of arranging a game for an off Saturday. The matter has not yet been considered by the directors of the Dunedin Club, but no doubt if a suitable date can be arranged the club will be more than willing to meet the wishes of the public service. The first vacant date will, however, be devoted to the annual, game between Dunedin and Caledonian for the Har-raway-Henaghan Cup. This fixture was set down for a date early in the season, but wet weather necessitated a postponement. FOUR-RINK CHAMPIONSHIP The final of the Four-rink Championship will be played between Dunedin (last year’s winners) and Caledonian on the Kaikorai Club’s green on Saturday. Play will be started at 2.30 p.m. Dunedin and Eoslyn met on the Caledpman Green on Tuesday evening to decide the winner of section A. The green had undergone special preparation and the playing surface was as near perfection as the most fastidious bowler could hope for. The game resulted in a win for Dunedin by four points and until the final bowl had been played the result was in doubt. The game between Gardiner (Dunedin) and Owen (Roslyn) proved rather one-sided. The Dunedin quartet proved to strong for their opponents and the skip, Gardiner, gave a fine allround exhibition of accurate play. The Eoslyn men hung on grimly until the twelfth head had been played,_ at which stage they were only .five points down. Dunedin then held the mat for seven heads in succession and .increased their score from 16 to 30, .finally winning by 30 to 17. . . . Another lop-eided game was that between Barnett (Roslyn) and Neill (Dunedin). From the fourth head the Roslyn men held the upper band, and with 12 heads completed they led by 16 —5. A two and four improved Neill's position, but Barnett’s response was two threes and a two, making the score 24—11 in his favour. Neill notched a single on each of the last four heads to finish nine down. , ■ , Nelson (D.) had a comfortable win oyer MacGillivray (R.), the final scores being 20 to 13 in Dunedin’s favour. All the Dunedin men played well, Nelson in particular giving a splendid exhibition. The play of the Roslyn men was not marked by the same degree of consistency, but the third player, C. Anderson, played an outstanding game. On theV sixteenth head Nelson led by 19 to 7, but the last five heads yielded six to Roslyn and one to Dunedin. „ , The meeting between Deare (D.), who skipped the champion Dominion rink in the 1931 tournament and was runner-up this year, and Tyrrell (R.), the runner-up this year for the Dominion Singles championship, was closely followed by the spectators. Three out of the four members of Deare’s rink were members of the quartet which took part in this year’s tournament, and Tyrrell was also strongly supported, his third, Armstrong, skipping a rink which qualified in this year’s Dominion tourney, and his lead, Thomas, being one of the laet eight to remain in the Singles championship. Tyrrell opened with a four on the first head, Deare responding with a five on the second. On the sixth head Deare led by 9 to 5, but a four to Tyrrell on the seventh head brought the tallies level, and a three and a four to Eoslyn gave the latter a substantial lead. The tenth yielded a brace to Dunedin, but the next four heads saw Tyrrell’s score mount to 23, Deare’s total then being 11. Eoslyn thereafter easily held the upper hand, but a four to Dunedin on sie eighteenth head, mainly the result of a faulty drive by Tyrrell when hia side was lying shot, improved Dunedin’s position. Deare’s play quite lacked the accuracy that he displayed in the Dominion tourney, and it is obvious that at present he is playing much below hia true form.

ADESS SHIELD COMPETITION Advice having been received that Anniversary Day is to be held this year on the Tuesday after Easter, the committee of the Dunedin Bowing Centre has made new arrangements for the Adess Shield competition.
