OPIUM DEN RAIDED

OCCUPIER HEAVILY FINED (Pee United Press Association.) , AUCKLAND, February 24. Following a raid by detectives on an opium den in Grey’s avenue last night, the four men who were arrested appeared before the court to-day. Ah Chan, aged 38, a 1 ndryinan, described as a hopeless' addict, was to-day fined £l5O for being the occupier of the premises, to which the police gained entry only by the use of crowbars and' axes. Three other Chinese were fined £l2 10s for being on the premises. The opium haul was the largest made by the police for several years. Small packets were found, which the police said were sold for 5s each, also six elaborate smoking pipes. Most of the opium was hidden in the ceiling.
