POUND-A-WEEK SCHEME The Mayoress (Mrs R. S. Black) presided at an enthusiastic meeting in the George Street School on Friday evening. A committee was formed, and Mrs Reid, 660 Castle street (telephone 10-632) was appointed secretary. Streets were allotted to members of the committee, who will call on the residents of the north end to see who will be willing to give a pound of groceries each week. It is expected that an excellent response will be the result, as this district was not worked last year. It was decided to ask for the help of Guides and Scouts, and a meeting of the various companies in the north end will be held next Friday night. The following is what will be most urgently required:—Tea, butter, sugar, oatmeal, flour, sago, or rice. JAMJARS REQUIRED A few people have offered to make jam for winter requirements provided they can obtain jam jars. Mrs Black is making a collection of these, and anyone wishing to make jam may obtain jars by telephoning 20-391. Anyone having jars to spare may leave them at the St. Andrew street depot or have them called for. The Mayoress has made the suggestion that the men who received jam last year return their empty jars to the depot, as this will help considerably towards renewing supplies. WEEKLY ORDERS No Hospital Board orders will be issued to-day from the emergency office. Applications must be made on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8.30 a.m.
