AMATEUR ATHLETICS

SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS A. A. CAMERON’S SUCCESS Under ideal conditions the third Southland championship meeting since its revival in 1930 was held by the Invercargll Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club on Saturday at Rugby Park. The track was in good order, but a steady breeze which blew across the ground precluded fast times in the sprint events. There was an attendance of about 1000. A strong contingent of athletes from Otago, including A. A. Cameron (of Oamaru) and J. G. Leckie. attended the meeting. The outstanding athlete of the day was undoubtedly A. A. Cameron, who was recently reinstated from the professional ranks, and who made his initial appearance at an amateur championship meeting. His best effort was in the Hop, Step, and Jump event, in which he jumped 47ft 4in, only half an inch off the New Zealand record. As this was contested against the wind, it is probable that without this handicap the record would have been broken. In addition to this title, Cameron won the High Jump, Broad Jump, and Throwing the Discus, and was second in the Shot Putt and 120 Yards Hurdles Championship. With 16 points he won the gold medal presented to the athlete gaining most points in championship running and field events. T. Pickering was second with 8 points. C. Pierson’s performance in the sprint events was meritorious, and he showed himself to be in a class of his own. Pickering ran a great race in the Quarter-mile to beat A. L. Price, the present Otago champion, by three yards in the fast time of 51 l-ssec. E. A. Taylor’s Half-mile in 2min 4sec was very fair, considering that the Otago champion made the pace from the start and was not pushed. One of the best races of the day was the Mile, in which A. R. Geddes, the promising young Dunedin middle-distance runner, defeated J. G. Barnes by a small margin. In the hurdling events I. O. Manson stood out by himself, winning both races in decisiye style. R. Creeser’a exhibition throw in the Javelin (158 ft sin) constituted a Southland record. A. C. Derbie, in winning both the 100 Yards and 220 Yards Junior Championship, promisee to become a first-class sprinter. In the cycling events the Otago performers, J. C. Fogarty and O. G. Smith, won the Mile ana Three-mile Championship respectively. The meeting, which was a great success, was controlled by a very efficient band of officials. Results. — 100 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP.
