FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

DRUIDISM. The Lily of the Valley Lodge held its fortnightly meeting, V.A. Bro. Reid presiding in the absence of the A.D. An official visit from A.D. Bro. Heather and officers to conduct business was received. A.D. Bro. Henderson (Royal Oak), P.A. Bro. Morrison, and others were welcome visitors. The usual routine work was carried out by the visitors. P.G.G. Bro. Reid was appointed official representative to the Rose of Palmerston on its quarter night. The latter part of the evening was occupied with cards — Lily v, Ivanhoe. Notice was received that the West Harbour Lodge had challenged for the euchre shield. The visitors replied to the welcome extended to them, and supper was handed round, the meeting closing early. Olive Branch Juvenile Lodge held its first meeting for the year, A.D. Bro. Grubb presiding over a good attendance. Correspondence was received from the Myrtle Lodge, apd its invitation. was accepted. The bards reported that there were no sick members. A candidate was received into the Order, the officers performing their, duties creditably. The item for the evening was “ Holiday Experiences,” given by several brothers. P.G.G. Bro. Reid was asked to convey greetings to the Star of Palmerston on his visit to that town. Several wellknown brothers intimated their intention of presenting medals for introducing members during the coming year for efficiency. A candidate was proposed for next night. The lodge closed early. A very enjoyable evening was the general opinion of those who attended the last meeting of Ivanhoe Lodge. There was very little business to attend to, so the entertainment of the visitors commenced early. District President Bro. E. Reeves, who attended officially, occupied the chair for the purpose of receiving the visitors. The Grand President, officers of the Grand Lodge, and members of the board and officers and members of the various lodges in Nos. I and 2 Districts attended officially, with their lady friends, and were cordially welcomed with harmony. Grand President Bro. W, M'Leod performed the task of presenting to the lodge, through J.P.A., Bro. Pinder, the general efficiency shield which had been competed for by the lodges in No. 1 and 2 Districts. The executive officers of the lodge then entertained all present with progressive euchre. After an hour’s enjoyable play Grand Treasurer Bro. E. Birt presented to the winners the four prizes. During supper the visitors replied 1 to the toasts. Linden Lodge, No. 5, U.A.0.D., met in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Roslyn, A.D. Bro. Millar presiding over a good attendance of members. A.D. Bro. Hopwood and his officers of Otago Lodge attended officially for the purpose of working the chairs. They were welcomed by Bro. Millar, and proceeded to carry out their duties in a very efficient manner, Bro. Morrison reported on the purchase of new cricket material, and a lively discussion on matters pertaining to the formation of a team ensued. It was decided to play Ivanhoe Lodge in the near future. A welcome visitor was P.A. Bro. Morris, of Lily of the Valley. The usual toasts were given and responded to by A.D. Bro. Hopwood for Otago, and P.A. Bro. Morris. A game of euchre concluded a pleasant evening.

Linden’s Pride, No. 8, met last Tuesday., for its first meeting of the year. J.P.A. Bro. Curtiss, in the absence of the A.D., who had gone to Australia, was in the chair, and was greeted by a fine muster of members. Lodge business was put through very quickly, and the boys related their holiday experiences, some amusing tales being told. It was decided to hold an election for the office of A.D. and V.A. next lodge night. The lodge adjourned early to enable executive members to attend Ivanhoe Lodge. Good Intent Lodge held its fortnightly meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mosgiei, on Wednesday evening, and A.D. Bro. J. Davidson presided. A letter was received from the secretary of the West Harbour Lodge, Bro. W. Connor, stating that that lodge would visit Good Intent on March 2. P.A. Bro. M. J. Thompson tendered his resignation as V.A. of the lodge, as he was leaving the district. His resignation was accepted with regret. Several brothers spoke of the good work' Bro. Thompson had done for the lodge, and wished him good luck and prosperity. Bro. Thompson replied and thanked the speakers for their kind word spoken on his behalf. All joined in singing “ For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Bro. R. ,H. Thompson also tendered his resignation as 0.G., which was accepted with regret. The vacancy in the V.A. chair was filled by Bro. L. J, Rankin, and the outside guardian by Sister Matherson. One candidate was initiated as a full benefit member of the lodge. Lily of the Valley Lodge held its usual meeting, A.D. Bro. Warlick presiding over a good .'.ttendance. Correspondence, sick pay and accounts were received and passed. Sec. Bro. Broekie was a welcome visitor. An invitation from the Ivanhoe Lodge to be present at the presentation of the General Efficiency Shield by the Grand Lodge was accepted. The item on the syllabus was cards, A.D. v. V.A,, and the latter team won. P.A. Bro. Carr intimated that he would present a medal for the membership campaign, and the offer was received with thanks. The visitors replied to the welcome extended to them. The lodge closed at an early hour. ' FORESTERS. The fortnightly meeting of Court Enterprise was held in the courtroom on Tuesday evening. The C.R., Bro. G. D. Wright, presided. All officers were present except the J. 8., Bro. Edwards. The Woodwards reported very favourably on the sick members. Letters of thanks were received from Bro. J. M’Naughton of Invercargill and also Bro. J, Hunter. An invitation to its anniversary was received from Court St. Andrew, to be held on February 15, was accepted. Two maternity claims were received and passed for payment. One candidate was initiated into the court by the C.R., I.P.C.R. Bro. Bastion taking the second part. The S.C.R., Bro. A. J. Breen, welcomed the new brother with the Foresters’ Toast. The C.R. proposed the toast to the visitors, which was responded to by C.R. Bro. W. Blair, of Court Pride of 'Dunedin. S.W. Bro. S. Johnson reported on the visit to Court Excelsior. J.W. Bro. I. Miller on the visit to Court Woodlands’ Pride, and S.C.R. Bro. A. J. Breen on the crib team at King Edward’s Pride. It was decided that the officers of the courts be the committee to combine with the officers of Court Pride of Dunedin to carry out the combined socials during the year. After the meeting the members and visitors sat down to a very enjoyable game of cards. •
