NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES
DEVIATION OF CREEK. The deviation of the Maeamlmv Bay Creek has at last been accomplished. The completion of this work will probably result in further improvements being carried out in the district in regard to drainage. The deviation of the creek has made a remarkable difference in the general appearance of that portion of the Macandrew Bay township. Water nowmg down the creek now follows a direct course from the District road through the cemetery, alongside Mr W. Rowlands store to the beach. When money is available attention will be paid to the unsightly mud flat in the vicinity of the Public Hall, where the creek formerly followed an erratic course. It is hoped in the course of time to fill in the mud flat and provide an attractive recreation ground. RELIEF WORKERS.
A great deal of dissatisfaction has been expressed by the unemployed in the Macandrew Bay district on account of the number of days’ work having been reduced to 2J and 12 days for married men. and also owing to the fact that no worn has been allocated for single men. It is the intention of the North-East Harbour Unemployment Relief Committee to make further efforts to assist all those in need. The secretary of the Relief Committee will be pleased to receive subscriptions and goods in the meantime. A special meeting of the Unemployment Relief Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr A. M'Hutchon presiding. The secretary submitted a report on the activities of the committee during the holiday period. A deputation from unemployed men waited on the committee in connection with the number of days allocated for married relief workers. It was -minted out that the present conditions were extremely hard on the men, and the committee was asked to take steps to have the number of working days increased. It was explained to the deputation that the number of days allocated for relief workers had been reduced in that district. It was not a fair proposition, as the working days which had been allocated by the authorities were less than the number of working days allocated to other districts. The committee decided not to take any action until the Minister of Unemploy- ' ment had issued his statement, as promised, in connection with the allocation of relief work for the fourth week. _ A further meeting of the committee will be held on Monday evening, when the question of unemployment relief will receive consideration PERSONAL.
The Rev. W. W. MacArthnr, minister of the Macandrew Bay Presbyterian Church, has returned from a holiday visit to Waimate. He will occupy the pulpit at the church to-morrow evening. Mr A. W. Alloo will take up his new duties as headmaster of the North-East Harbour School when the scholars reassemble after the term holidays next week. Mr Alloo has superseded Mr R. L. Blair, who has been appointed headmaster of the Concord School. FORMER PUPILS OF SCHOOL.
Former pupils of the North-East Harbour School held a reunion social last Saturday evening in the Macandrew Bay Public Hall. There was a large attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. BEACH ROAD FRONTAGE.
Work on the sea frontage and mud flat near the Macandrew Bay Public Hall is at a standstill owing to the shortage of money. A further effort will be made by the Unemployment Relief Committee and the North-East Harbour Ratepayers Association to raise a sum of money to continue this necessary work. BOATING CLUB.
The North-East Harbour Boating Club is holding successful functions for the purpose of raising funds to make improvements to the slipway at the boat shed. The club members are showing considerable activity this season, and as it is controlled by a keen band of officials very creditable work is being carried out in many directions. BUSINESS QUIET. The Macandrew Bay business community has found the general run of business very quiet in comparison with previous years. ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. Relief workers have been employed for some time widening the approach irpm Beach road to Cosy Dell. This is regarded ns an urgent road improvement scheme. Other work to be carried out will be the widening of District road opposite the Macandrew Bay Presbyterian Church. SANDERS SEA SCOUTS.
The North-East Harbour Company of Sanders Sea Scouts recently held the annual camp at Beatty’s Beach. The boys profited by their training and spell of open-air life, and had a most enjoyable holiday.
