SCOTTISH SOCIETY
MONTHLY SOCIAL. The monthly social of the Scottish Society of Dunedin was held in Lakes Restaurant on Saturday evening. Ihe president (Mr George Munro) extended a welcome to visitors from the Invercargill Scottish Society, and at the same time wished all a “ guid new year. A fair representation from the Welsh Society was present, and later the president of the Welsh Society (Mr J. E. Davies) favoured the company with the Welsh National Anthem in his native tongue, and as an encore “ Mary.” Piper Eric MacKenzie opened the proceedings with a selection on the pipes. Community singing was indulged in, and such favourites as “ The Garb of Old Gaul, “ God Defend New Zealand,” etc., were amongst the numbers. Highland dances were performed by Misses Matheson, N. Steele, N. MacMillan, and P. Steele. The sailor’s hornpipe was' given by Miss P. Steele. Miss MacMillan danced the Seanntruibhais, whilst Miss N. Steele performed the sword dance. Songs were rendered by Mrs Matheson, “Hi oro’ 's na Horo Eile “ Lochnagar," by Mrs Mac Niven; “ The Eriskay Love Lilt ” by Nurse Paul, of Scotland; “O’ a’ the Airts,” Mrs K. Waterson. The Misses Steele introduced a novel item iu the “Military Dance, and this item was much appreciated by those present. A hearty invitation was received from the Burns Club, inviting the society to its church service on January 24, and this was accepted. Piper Angus MacMillan supplied the bulk of the national music, and Mrs Donald was the accompanist. “Auld Lang Syne brought a happy evening to a close.
