OBITUARY
MR H. J. H. ELIOTT The death is announced of Mr Huntly John Harry.Eliott, who was well known in shipping and commercial circles in Christchurch. He was the eldest son of Mr H. J. H. Eliott, one time Undersecretary for Lands, and later Undersecretary for Mines, and was born in Wellington. As a youth of 17 he entered the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company in Wellington and held different positions, rising to the managership of the Christchurch branch. He retired in 1927 on superannuation after 43 years’ service with the company. For several years Mr Eliott was a member of the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. He married Miss Laura Kennedy, daughter of Captain Kennedy, formerly of the Union Steam Ship Company, and once well- known as the master of the Rotomahana. CAPTAIN A. JACKA MELBOURNE, January 17. (Received Jan. 18, at 1 a.m.) The death is announced of Captain A. Jacka, the first Australian to win the Victoria Cross in the Great War. Captain Jacka won the V.C. in 1915 on Gallipoli. He was also awarded the M.C. later in the war.
