CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING Judging by the times recorded on Tuesday evening by the Auckland representatives in the forthcoming Intermediate and Junior Championships the Otago team will have its work cut out in retaining the War Memorial Shield, but whichever team wins the trophy, it is certain that the meeting will be productive of some ot the finest competitive swimming that has ever been seen in New Zealand. Commenting last week on the brilliant young intermediate, Crump’s prospects, the Auckland Herald states: “ Noel Crump should have no difficulty whatever in annexing the intermediate boys* titles. Judging by his hitherto best time ot 62 2-ssec, which stands ns the New Zealand junior record, he should be capable of breaking the minute. Such a performance, as, say, a 59sec swim, would be equal in merit to the _ time of 61sec, which was recently registered in fresh water by the Otago champion, W. Jarvis, who, incidentally defeated Crump in the Dominion junior title event last season. Crump’s appearance in the 220 Yards Championship Race is being awaited with the kennest interest, as he is expected to improve upon G. Bridsou’s record of five years’ standing, 2min 35sec. That Crump s chances of setting a new record are very bright is realised by comparing his best time to date, 2min 37see, with that of Bridson.” Since this appeared Crump has broken Bridson’s record by 3-ssec, so that the race for the furlong, with Crump, Jarvis, Geddes and M'Grath should be worth going a long way to see. Ini the junior girls’ division it looks as if Miss E. Rainey and the Otago girl, Mias W. Newall, will fight out the issue in the 150 and 100 yards events, as both of them have registered good times this season. Miss Rainey captured two records on Tuesday night—the 50 Yards Free Style, which she covered in 31 2-ssec, and the 100 Yards Free Style, in which she registered 75sec. The Otago junior representative’s times for these distances are 33 I-ssec and 76 3-ssec respectively, and as she has improved considerably since the meeting at which she returned these figures, she stands a good chance of extending Miss Rainey to her utmost. By lowering by 1 4-6 sec Miss D. Bowman’s record of 63sec in the Intermediate Girls’ 75' Yards Breaststroke event. Miss Jean Webster has fairly won her place in the Auckland team, and if she retains her form, she should have no difficulty in capturing this title. On the present form of the various competitors there is every indication that the 1932 intermediate and junior championship meeting will see established records 4 that will stand for a long time.

WATER POLO Three rounds of water polo have now been completed and Dunedin A is in front with six points, St. Clair A and B each has four, Kiwi A three, Dunedin B one, and Kiwi B has yet to break the ice. The most exciting match of the round was that between Kiwi A and St. Clair A, which ended in a draw, each side scoring three goals. Ces. Lewis was a tower of strength to St. Clair, though his condition failed him towards the finish. The beat player in the match wss M. Taylor, who was always where he was_ wanted and scored a couple of goals. He is one of the fittest players in Dunedin. J. Swan played in goal for St. Clair and gave a fine display, H. D. Gillies also doing well for Kiwi in this position.. Though beaten by nine goals to one by Dunedin A, Kiwi B was not disgraced, and A. Murdoch stamped himself as a most promising player. _ Val Newall was the particular star, scoring seven goals. St. Clair B sprang a surprise on Dunedin B and finished up winners by seven goals to two. Jack M'lndoe was in fine form, and M'Kenzie also played well. The latter is fast, but he can further improve his handling. CLUB NOTES KIWI. Peter Mathieson, of the Kiwi Club, won his second title this season when he carried off the 100 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Backstroke Championship on Monday night in 82 4-ssec. W. J. Jarvis finishing second. Young Peter is new to backstroke this season, but conscientious attention to .training has worked wonders, and he will compete in this event at Wellington as well as in the diving. W. J. Jarvis will also take part in this event. The team has been strengthened by the inclusion of J. Barry and Miss G._ Rix. The former will contest all the junior boys’ events and should be hard to beat over 220 yards, while Miss Rix will carry Otago’s colours in the Junior Girls’ Breaststroke, at which she has been training hard for some weeks past, having made a big improvement. At the Kiwi Club’s carnival to-night Reg. Geddes will attempt to break C. Heard’s long-standing record of 77 4-ssec for 100 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Breaststroke, and on the way he has been swimming lately he should not be far out. It is a long time since such big entries have been received as for this carnival. A novel event at the Otago Centre’s carnival on February 2 will be the Eight-a-side Relay Championship, while other championship events to he decided are the 220 Yards Breaststroke Championship and .the Intermediate Girls’ Diving Championship. An attractive programme has been arranged. DUNEDIN. The club’s hour was very well attended on Friday last, and several new members joined. Although he was disqualified for not swimming the correct breaststroke last Friday, J. Barry is not giving up hope, and his coach, D. C. Bannatyne, is doing his utmost to bring him up to championship standard. With W. J. Jarvis. R. Nuttall, J. Byrnes, Brian Kerr, V. Newall, R. _C. flakier to represent it in the six-a-sicle Relay, the club stands a very good chance of winning the Old’s Shield to-night. _ Miss Gwen Rix is steadily training at the breaststroke, and Miss W. Newall, by the way she is moving along at present, should show to advantage at the championship meeting. Miss Staples and Miss Johnson continue to give their services in the coaching of new members. Val Newall and J. J. Byrnes, two of the strongest of the “A ” polo players, have been putting In some strenuous practice for the banner matches. These two players have a good understanding of one another’s play, and form a combination that is an asset to any team. Miss Helen Paterson, a new member, displays distinct promise, but she should pay more attention to her kick. A lady swimmer who should do well if she enters for handicap events is Miss E. Scofield, who has shown considerable improvement since the beginning of the season.
