SENSATION IN HONOLULU

HAWAIIAN YOUTH LYNCHED PROMINENT PEOPLE ARRESTED (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) HONOLULU, January 9. (Received Jan. 10, at 7 p.m.) Honolulu is quiet but tense after its first lynching. An American naval officer, his wife’s mother, and one enlisted man are held for murder after a Hawaiian youth who was facing trial for assaulting the officer’s wife was kidnapped from the courthouse, shot, and killed. The army and navy personnel are confined to their stations to prevent further trouble. Word has been received from Washington that when the fleet manoeuvres are held here in February the men will not be allowed to go ashore. The woman who has been arrested is prominent in New York and London society, Mrs Granville Fortescue. Her son-in-law is Lieutenant Thomas Massic. THE VICTIM TORTURED. HONOLULU, January 9. (Received Jan. 11, at 0.30 a.ra.) The victim was Joseph Kahahawai, who is accused of being one of five who criminally assaulted Mrs Massie, a naval officer’s wife, last September. The police say that the youth was seized, carried into Mrs Fortescue’s residence, stripped and tortured, and thrust into a bath in order to get a confession from him. He was then shot dead, and the body was taken away in a car, which was driven by Mrs Fortescue. The affair has created a sensation, as for months past there has been a plot among naval officers to seek revenge for assaults by natives on white \?omen.
