BLUESKIN SHOW
EXCELLENT CATTLE DISPLAY UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS The Blueskin A. and P. Society’s annual show’ was held at Waitati on Saturday when the weather conditions were anything but favourable. Though there was little rain, the day was overcast, and a cold breeze sprang up during the afternoon. The attendance was satisfactory, the “ gate ” proving to be only a very small {unount short of the takings at the previous show. The entries generally were good, the cattle section being particularly strong. The competition w r as very keen in these classes, and the winning beasts were all outstanding exhibits. The entry of draughts was not so good as that of the previous year, but there was a fine selection of light horses. The home industries section was revived, and excellent entries were received. Most of the awards in this section were won locally. Numerically the strongest section in the show was the competitions, which were very well patronised and keenly contested. The competitions judge stated that the events were the best he had seen at any country show in Otago this season, and he had never, in the past 40 years, seen better jumpers at Waitati. The hacks and ponies were described as an excellent lot, fit for exhibition at any show. The most outstanding entry was Mrs T. D. Dalziel’S horse Chrysler, which, though only in its sixth season, has already won 110 first prizes and 24 championships. Though there were not many draughts forward, they were excellent beasts, and the competition was quite keen. The Ayrshires were good in all classes and, though there was not a great deal of competition, the cattle were fit to take part in any show. The Jersey section was a very satisfactory one, Mr P. Hellyer’s bull, Willonyx Oxford King, continued its unbeaten record by winning it ninth championship. This beast is only two years old, and it is considered to be improving all the time. The same exhibitor showed the champion cow, Scenic Sylvius. This championship proved to be a reversal of the order at the Dunedin show, the cow which won the championship at the Otago meeting being somewhat out of condition at the Waitati Show. The best two-year-old heifer was a very promising beast, and the yearlings were an outstanding class. All were in excellent show condition, and had been well brought out and carefully handled. The judge expressed the opinion that Jerseys had recently grown very much in popularity in this district. The Friesians were a feature of the show, the judge stating that they were the best he had ever seen at Waitati, All the exhibits were, in excellent condition, and showed that they had been handled well. The competition w r as very keen, and there w r ere only a few points between the prize-winners in each class. The chamipon and reserve champion cows were easily the best pair the judges had encountered at this show. Though the entries in the home industries section were not numerically strong, the quality all round was excellent and the texture of the baking exhibits was a feature of the display. The competition was not excentionally keen, and the judges had little difficulty in placing the awards. The folio-wing is the prize list:— CATTLE FRIESIANS. Judges: Messrs C. Nicholson and J.
