THE NELSON DISTRICT HIGHLY SATISFACTORY RESULTS. (Per United Press Association.) NELSON, December 14. In an interim report on the proficiency examinations Senior-inspector T, J. Griffin says: “ The candidates for the most part entered upon the examination in an agitated frame of mind, due to disturbing propaganda that emanated from outside eources. The results, however, are highly satisfactory. The public school results show that 672 candidates sat for examination and of these 528 gained their proficiency, 109 gained competency, and 35 failed. In other words, 78.0 per cent, gained proficiency certificates, 16.2 competency, and 5.2 failed. These results must be regarded as distinctly good. In 1928 the average per cent, of proficiency candidates was 75 for the district, so that this year’s results show a distinct improvement on those of that year, although they are lower than those of last year. In awarding certificates the inspectors this year, as in former years, were guided largely by the estimates of the head teachers.” The chairman (Air W. H. AlTntyrc, AI.L.C.), said the report could be regarded as very satisfactory. In reply to Air Knapp the inspector said that the arithmetic paper was distinctly harder this year.
