TOKOMAIRIRO FARMERS’ CLUB

SIXTY-SIXTH ANNUAL SHOW A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION FINE DISPLAY OF HORSES The sixty-sixth annual summer show of the Tokomairiro Farmers’ Club was held at Milton on Saturday. The change of the day from the middle of the week to a Saturday had the etfect of attracting a large number of visitors from Dunedin, the total attendance during the day being only slightly smaller than that of last year. In this respect the club is to be con. gratulated, inasmuch as most shows held this summer have experienced very lean days as far as gate takings went. The • catalogue of entries presented on this occasion was a credit to the district and also to the club, which has achieved a good deal in the direction of encouraging the breeding of better stock in the county which it serves. The fact that there is in the Tokomairiro district a keener interest in and appreciation of good, wellbred live stock is indicated by the manner in which the character of the Tokomairiro show has changed during the past decade. The cattle rings have improved greatly in quality, and variety of breeds, and the sheep pens contain a far bettet average of quality than ruled a few years ago. Heavy horsp breeding finds many skilful and enthusiastic followers in this district, and light horse fanciers are still numerous, the quality of their stock being such as to attract keen competition from many other parts of Otago. This year’s show is notable for the excellence of the competition in most classses and for the highly satisfactory entries received, the total number of exhibits exceeding 600. Nothing, however, was better than the display of heavy and light horses, .particularly the latter, and it may be conjectured that an energetic secretary whose own inclinations turn very definitely towards a well-bred stylishly-moving horse of any breed at all had a good deal to do with the assembling of such excellent fields as were paraded before the judge on Saturday afternoon. THE CATTLE. Only in the cattle rings was there any lack of competition. There was only one exhibitor in the Ayrshire section, Mr R. G. Alexander, who was represented by half a dozen head, most of which were heifers of a very promising type. In the Friesian section Messrs J. Robinson and Sons were unopposed. They showed a couple of very nice bulls, four very stylish heifers, and a couple of aged cows. In the Jersey section things were very much different, there being as many as eight entries in some classes. The field of yearling heifers was an exceptionally good one, the Barnego breeder, Mr E. H. Smith, winning both first and second prizes, with another South Otago exhibitor, Mr M, G. Shepherd, of Balclutha, third. Among the other prize-winners in the section were Messrs Peattie Bros., C. G. A. Wray, John Howie, G. Coutts, and T. H. Russell. The entry of crossbred milkers was also very good, and the Special dairy classes were all well filled, and ifacluded two special classes for members of the Tokomairiro Calf Club, THE SHEEP SECTIONS. Border Leicesters and Romney Marsh made up the bulk of the purebred sheep entry. In the former section Mr D. A. Drinnan was the most successful exhibitor. He won the ram championship with a very fine stamp of ram and secured the ewe ribbon with a striking one-shear ewe which was easily the pick of a large class. Other exhibitors were Messrs W. Drinnan, Oliver Grey (Lovell’s Flat), and A. M’Millan (Waitahuna). In the Romney Marsh section Messrs D. Russell, R. Bruce, Oliver Grey, and A. M'Millan divided the awards between them. Mr Grey took the ram championship and Mr Russell the ewe ribbon, as well as first and second prize cards in the ewe hogget class. Mr Bruce was first and second in the one-shear ewe class and Mr Grey was similarly success- ' ful in the class for one-shear rams. Mr Grey showed the best of the ram hog gets, with Mr Bruce second and Mr Russell third. Mr James Gardyne showed the only Shropshire entry,- & .very good type of rani, and Mr Oliver Grey provided the ■whole of the Southdown section, a couple of rams and two ewes making up the dis- ■ play. . ’ There was a very fair- selection of crossbred sheep, with keen competition in most classes. Strong wools were most in evidence, and some outstanding sheep were to be seen in these pens. The "fat sheep .and fat lambs were also worthy of more than passing notice.. The lambs were all well forward, and were brought out in very good condition. Among the prizewinners were D. Russell, C. N. Lowery, G. Coutts, A. E.. Martin, A. Campbell, and J. H. Jaffray. THE HORSE RINGS. The draught horse section was full of interest, and, although there were not many entires, the display of males was a good deal better than many a larger show has managed to assemble this year. The champion stallion was Jilr A. Wilson’s (Henley) Scotland’s Victor, the only aged entire shown. There were, however, two very nice two-year-olds, Mr R. G. Lockhart’s entry gaining tjae red ticket. In the yearling class there were four entries, the same breeder winning the first with Messrs AlJison Brothers second. _ The champion mare was a splendid animal, winning the red ticket in the yeld mare class for Mr S. Young, as well as the first prize for the best colonial bred mare. Messrs R. G. Lockhart and Allison Brothers were keen rivals throughout the section, the former taking precedence in the female classes, and the latter taking nearly all the awards in the gelding section, as well as the champion ribbon for geldings. Messrs Allison Bros, also won the trophy for gaining most points in the draught horse section, being closely followed by Mr Lockhart. Others who exhibited successfully. besides Messrs Allison Brothers and Lockhart were Messrs A. Wilson, W. Allison, John Allison, W. H. Carruthers, James Dow, and S. Young. '• In the light horse rings there was keen competition and a coramendably high standard of quality. Misses F. and N. Walker (Outram) were particularly suc- [' eessful in the pony classes, and among their many wins was the harness horse championship. They secured both first and second prizes in the harness pony under lii hands class and both the premier awards in the class for saddle ponies of the same type. Messrs W. J. Roberts fClinton), Ken Russell, Miss K. Wood (Beaumont) i and Adam Colquhoun (Out•iam) were also in the picture. The best of the field of seven 13-stone hacks was Mrs T. D. Dalziel’s Chrysler, who was later awarded the hack championship, and won for the second time the Greenslade trophy for the best hack of this weight. Chrysler has had a remarkable show ring career. He was purchased by Mrs Dalziel as a four-year-old a little over five years ago, and is now in his sixth show season. Saturday's championship ribbon was the twentysecond he has won in that period, and his first prize awards now number 106. No other horse at present appearing in the show ring can claim such a record and it may be said that very few, if.any, have surpassed it in the past. Among Chrysler’a successes on Saturday was first prize in the best type of hunter class and second prize for the best walking saddle horse. First prize in the large class of 11 stone hacks went to Mr Lindsay Robertson (Outram), and Mr R. C. Greenelade. (Dunedin) won the red ticket in the 15 stone hack class. An interesting programme of competitions followed the conclusion of the grand parade of prize-winning stock which was held after the judging had been completed, and the large crowd which surrounded the ring had plenty to interest and amuse it. The gate takings for the day were about £6B, compared with £7l, last year. HOME INDUSTRIES. As usual there was keen competition In-the home industries classes. The quality of the dairy produce was exceptionally highland the same was said by the judge of the baking section of the samples of local cooking which filled the large home industries pavilion. The excellent manner j n which the housewives of the Bruce County and surrounding districts have

always supported the Tokomairiro Farmers’ Club has undoubtedly been an important factor in the steady growth which this show has made of late years, PRIZE LIST The following is the prize list:— CATTLE AYRSHIRES.
