ANGLICAN ORPHANGES

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Dunedin Anglican Orphanages was held in St. Paul’s Schoolroom yesterday afternoon, Bishop Richards presiding over a fair attendance of workers and supporters. , ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the committee stated, inter alia: — The outstanding feature of the present statement is the excess of expenditure over income, amounting to £345 18s Cel. It was, of course, only to be expected that under the present conditions of depression there would be an adverse balance, but the committee appeals to all its friends and supporters to lighten the burden as much as possible, and acknowledges with much thankfulness bequests from the late Sir George Fenwick, Miss A. B. MacKeuz.ie. and Miss E. MacKenzie. The steady increase in endowments of this nature is a distinctly encouraging feature, the income from which adds very materially to the resources of the committee. During the past year the committee has received advice that the following legacies have been bequeathed to the homes: —Legacy oi £3OO by the late Mr W. Tales, for St. Mary s; residue of the late Mrs Elizabeth Macdonald’s estate (about £600) for the Anglican Memorial Home for Boys. Advice has just been received from Sydney that a former resident of Dunedin had left the residue of her estate, subject to a life interest, in equal shares to St. Mary’s, the Anglican Memorial Home for Boys, and another institution. The committee expects to receive not less t.san £2OOO from this bequest. The commutae would place on record its appreciation ot the valuable services rendered to the homes by Dr S. Batchelor and DivL. H. Williams. The valued and efficient woik of Miss Farrow (matron of St. Maty & I and Mr and Mrs Gerrard (master and matron of the Boys ? and their respective staffs call for heal ty appreciation of the committee and an friends of the homes. In moving the adoption ot the report and balance sheet, the chairman said mat it was encouraging to note that tue returns were increasing. During the year several welcome bequests had been re ceived, and notification had been reported that a further legacy had been bequeathed to the homes. It was unfortunate that expenditure had exceeded income by £345 18s 6d during the period under review, but there was little Uouothat if the supporters of the homes ran led round, this deficit would be wiped off n the next 12 months. Mrs. Stanley Batch’• lor seconded the motion, which «aa carried. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORTThe superintendent (the Rev. S. J. Cooper) reported that of the 15 niontns under review much time had been spent in the parishes throughout the dioces-e visiting subscribers, conducting services, and doing all possible to let supporters know something of the child welfaie » carried on by the Anglican Church, lbperiod had been the most difficult they have yet faced; many of the largest Mib-scribers-had had to reduce, and m some cases discontinue their subscriptions for a time. Many new subscribers had been enrolled, and yet the expenditure had greatly exceeded the income, As these two orphanages were the only church home operating in the diocese it was not too much to ask that they should at least pay their''way year by year. Withorn the whole-hearted support of ail the people, backed up by their prayers good results would not be achieved. lai move produce and gifts in kind had beeni received than formerly; gifts in kind were always acceptable—everything received was put to the best possible use. inc matrons, master, and staff had co-opetateu loyally and had given of their best, -he appearance of the .children undei the charge being often favourably commented upon. ■ , , The report was adopted. HOME REPORTS. The reports of the St. Mary’s Orphanage and the Memorial Home for Boys we’ c also adopted, the master of the boys Home (Mr J. S. Gerrard) making special reference to the difficulty he was experiencing in getting boys placed in employ,nellt--. - VOTES OF THANKS. ’ " The meeting closed with votes of than its to Mr S. P. Mirams (hon. treasurer), Mr J. G. Butler (hon. auditor), the chapter of St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Rev. 1. L. Richards.
