SLUMS OF LONDON
NEW ZEALANDER’S IMPRESSIONS (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, August 7. A representative of the Hyde Reporter (Cheshire) has been looking up Mr W. J. Bardsley (Dunedin), and has devoted some space to his successful career in New Zealand after an absence of 55 years. The traveller is referred to as a brisk, cheerful man, and a very enthusiastic New Zealander. Though he is finding much to interest him on his visit to the “ Old Country,” he is going back to the Dominion. That country is not exempt at the present time from unemployment, in common with other countries, but Mr Bardsley states that there are still plenty of opportunities for young men who are keen and anxious to get on. The Chronicle further adds:— Mrs Bardsley, like her husband, ie keenly interested in social work among the young people in Dunedin. While Mr Bardsley is connected with the Y.M.C.A., his wife has for a long period been associated with the Y.W.C.A., and has held the position of chairman ot the Dunedin branch. During their stay in London a special officer delegated by the Chief Commissioner of Police showed them round the slum areas of the metropolis. “We were disillusioned,” said Mr Bardsley. “The slums were not such awful places as we imagined, thanks to the welfare work that has taken place. We were particularly delighted to see what the Prince of Wales had done with the zone of which he is landlord.”
