Mr R. A. H. Hutchins, of Surrey, England, left by the express yesterday for Wellington. Mr H. R. Smith, who has been transferred from the Dunedin branch of the Bank of New South Wales to the Christchurch branch, left for the north by the express yesterd.'U’. The 1 appointment of Mr George Swan to the position of first assistant at the Mornington School has been recommended by the school committee, and it will be confirmed at the next meeting of the Otago Education Board. At a special meeting of the St. Knda Borough Council last night, Cr G. Glue wag appointed to represent the council on the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board in place of Cr A. W. Edgar, who recently resigned. At the meeting of the Dunedin Bowling Centre last evening, the chairman (Mr J. Allan) referred to the deaths of three prominent bowlers—Messrs D. Scott (Caledonian), and J. D. Smith and A. Bolwell (Dunedin) —and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried, all those present standing in silence. The Rev. W. B. Scott, of Waimate, has been invited to become superintendent of the Wellington South circuit of the Methodist Church. A familiar figure on the Rugby fields of the Dominion in Mr T. Parata, who has officiated in the role of referee for some 35 years, has decided to retire from active association with the game. Although the major portion of his refereeing has been accomplished in the Horowhenua and Manawatu districts, Mr Parnta attained international standard, and he controlled matches during the visit of the Springboks in 1921 and of New South Wales in 1923. Mr John Carter, manager of the Palmerston North branch of the Union Bank of Australia, will leave New Zealand today by the Makura to take up the position of manager of the bank at Brisbane. Mrs Carter will proceed to Australia at the end of the year when their son, Mr J. N, Carter, completes this year’s term at the Medical School of Otago University. Mr H. A. Humphreys, who drew the ■first prize ticket in the “Lucky Bird” art union, has had a email business for the sale of drapery in Ashburton for the past four years and a-half. Before that he was connected with the staff of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association at Ashburton for 20 years. Mr Humphreys recently purchased a section at Tmwald, with the intention of building a house on it, and he says that the £2OOO will bo useful for this purpose. Ho has been choirmaster at the Baring Square Methodist Church, Ashburton, for many years.
