WOMAN FOUND DEAD. HEAD TERRIBLY BATTERED. SYDNEY, September 21. (Received Sept. 21, at 9 p.m.) A middle-aged, unidentified woman, whose head was terribly battered, with one ear severed, was found dead on a bod in a basement of the city residential chambers. Her small terrier dog was also dead, with its head smashed in. The police express the opinion that the woman was murdered in a fiendish manner, probably while she was asleep during the night.

A LATER MESSAGE,

VICTIM QUITE YOUNG,

SYDNEY, September 21. (Received Sept. 22, at 2 a.m.) The victim was not middle-aged but is a mere girl between 10 and 18. The features were so disfigured by the injuries that a wrong impression was gathered of her age. The police believe that she is named Gilligan. She had resided with a woman who rented the flat and whose whereabouts are being sought.
