OBITUARY
MR DONALD M'LEAN (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 21. The death has occurred of Mr Donald MTLean, a well-known resident of the city, aged 82 years. For over 27 years he was a director of the Equitable Building and Investment Company, Wellington, and he was chairman of that company at the time of his death. The deceased is survived by his widow, two daughters—Miss M‘Lean and Mrs C. Stannard (Nelson) —and three sons. Messrs D. M‘Lean (New Plymouth), and J. A. and A. R. M'Lean (Porangahau). MR DANIEL J. FINNEGAN A cablegram received yesterday from Sydney announced the death there of a one-time well-known citizen, Mr Daniel J. Finnegan, a son of the late Sergeant Finnegan. Mr Finnegan in his earlier life was employed in the Dunedin branch of the Dresden Piano Company, and he then commenced business on his own account in the North Island. He subsequently left for Sydney, where he had resided for many years. He was connected with the well-known music house of Messrs Beale and Co., and at the time of his death was managing director of the firm.
ARCHDEACON KEMPTHORNE
The death occurred at Nelson on Friday night of the Ven. Archibald John Pratt Kempthorne, vicar of St. Paul’s, Brightwater, and Archdeacon of Waimea. He was in his eighty-second year. He leaves a widow and large family, including Miss Kempthorne, field secretary of the camp-fire movement in the United States of America, the Bishop of Polynesia (the Rt. Rev. L. S. Kempthorne), the Rev, A. Kempthorne (Feilding), the Rev. M. Kempthorne (Karori), and Mr Selwyn Kempthorne (Lower Hutt). One son, Harold Kempthorne, was killed in the war. Archdeacon Kempthorne was born in 1849, and married in 1878 Mary Louisa, daughter of Dr Boor, of Nelson. He had five sons and five daughters. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Parnell, an;J at Bishopdale College, Nelson, and was ordained deacon in 1873 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and became a priest in Nelson in 187 G. In 1885, he became examining chaplain to the Bishop of Nelson, and was commissary in 1888. In 1916 he became canon of Nelson Cathedral. He was curate of Stoke from 1874 to 1876, headmaster of Bishops’ School from 1876 to 1878, vicar of Reefton from 1878 to 1880, vicar of Trinity, Greymouth, from 1880 to 1885, of Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson, from 1885 to 1916, and became vicar of St. Paul’s, Brightwater, in 1916, and Archdeacon of Waimea in the same year.
