THE NAVAL SENSATION
PROTEST AGAINST PAY CUTS VESSELS REACH HOME PORTS WEEK-END LEAVE GRANTED (British Official Wireless.) (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY, September 19. (Received Sept. 21, at 5.5 p.m.) The Portsmouth and Devonportmanned ships of the Atlantic Fleet reached their home ports this morning from Invergorden, and several vessels arrived at Sheerness yesterday. There was not the slightest sign of any departure from the normal routine. The Sheerness men were yesterday given shore leave, and the usual week-end leave was granted to-day. The ratings seemed happy and contented, and press messages say that in conversation they expressed themselves as well satisfied with the Admiralty’s promise to invest! gate any cases of hardship arising out of the cuts in pay. Instructions are being issued to the commanding officers of ships and establishments to forward to the commander-in-chief of their home port details of typical cases involving exceptional hardship, and also to communicate the names of ratings whose oral evidence would be of value and who are prepared to furnish evidence if required, such ratings to be given the assistance of officers in putting their case.
