A later wireless message received by the New Zealand Shipping Company from the captain of the Somerset states that the vessel is expected to arrive In the Lower Harbour this afternoon from Falmouth, via Panama. The Somerset, which is in ballast, will load products at Port Chalmers for London. CORNWALL FROM LIVERPOOL. The Federal Line steamer Cornwall Is due at Auckland to-day from Liverpool. En route from New York, via Tampico, to New Zealand, the C. and D. Line’s motor ship Pert Alma has reported by wireless that she expects to arrive at Auckland to-morrow evening. PORT FAIRY LEAVES LONDON. The C. and D. Line’s motor ship Port Fairy left London last Friday morning for Port Chalmers Lyttelton, Timaru, and New Plymouth, via Suva. She Is due at Suva on October 26 and at Port Chalmers about November 2. KAIMAI TO RESUME. The Union Company’s Kalmal, which has been laid up In the stream at Wellington, will bo recommissioned this week. She will leave Wellington to-morrow for Westport. MATSON LINER SONOMA. The Matson Line steamer Sonoma, from San Francisco and Los Angeles, via Honolulu, left Pago Pago on September 18 for Suva and Auckland. She Is due at Auckland on Friday, and will sail later the same day for Sydney. PORT FREMANTLE AT LONDON. The C. and D. Line has received cable advice that the motor ship Port Fremantle, which left Auckland on August 12, reached London on September 17. ZBALANDIC AND PAKEHA. The Shaw, Savlll and Albion motor ship Zealandlc, which left London for Australia on August 18, will come to New Zealand afterwards to take the October-Novembcr loading for England. The United States Shipping Board recently appealed to national shipping interests to form a pool of £700.000 for the assistance of the United States Lines, a company which Is In difficulties owing to the general depression. The project Is reported to have fallen through, and the latest suggestion Is that the combined International Mercantile Marine and Roosevelt Interests should take over control. It Is understood that Mr P. A. S. Franklin, president of the 1.M.M., has made a definite offer for the U.S. Lines. NEWCASTLE COAL SHIPMENTS. The quantity of coal. Including bunkers, shipped at Newcastle during the week ended August 27, for places beyond the State was 40,271 tons, of which 1500 tons represented overseas bunkers. The total for the corresponding period last year was 53,762. The quantity of coal. Including bunkers, shipped at Newcastle during August for places beyond the State, was 147,077 tons, of which 5503 tons represented overseas bunkers. The decrease during August, compared with July, was 28,205 tons. Compared with August, 1930, the export showed a decrease of 5323 tons. WELLINGTON FERRY WHARF. The work of extending the Lyttelton Ferry wharf at Wellington has been almost completed by the Wellington Harbour Board. The Union Company’s new ferry steamer Rangatlra Is so long that It became necessary to lengthen the wharf before she arrives from England on October 13, and the first pile of the wharf extension was driven on June 25. The wharf has been extended by 40ft, and the waiting shod by 20ft, so that passengers may step off the gangways of the new ship under shelter. The Harbour Board officials are satisfied with the progress made towards completion of the wharf, and state that although the Rangatlra Is a little late In her arrival because of a fire just before she was ready to sail the first time from Greenock, the wharf would have been ready for her Just the same had she arrived on her previous due date. The finishing touches will be put on the wharf before the end of the month. During the progress of the extension work the steamers engaged In the WelllngtonLyttelton ferry service have been berthed at No. 1 north Queen’s Wharf, but about the end of the month they will be again berthed at the usual ferry wharf.
