STRIKE IN BARCELONA

THE CITY PARALYSED SEVERAL PEOPLE KILLED. MADRID, September 3. (Received Sept. 4, at 8 p.m.) At Barcelona at least eight people were killed and many injured in a general strike, which is paralysing the city. All the shops are closed, and the newspapers are not being published. The troops are confined to barracks. Telephone and telegraph lines have been cut Post offices, banks, and Government buildings are being guarded by machine guns, and the police are equipped with rifles. The strike was declared as a protest against the drastic suppression of a mutiny in gaol. Cavalry dispersed angry strikers, firing on a mob which was prowling in the streets.
