The vessel, which is of about 8965 tons, dead-weight, on a draught ■of 25ft llln; has the following dimensions: 395 ft by 54ft 91n by 32ft. The main machinery consists of a single-acting two-cycle six-cylinder Armstrong Sulzer motor, developing 3300 l.h.p. The auxiliary machinery Is driven by electricity. The vessel is designed for a speed of approximately 11.2 knots. There Is an excellent library of 304 volumes at the disposal of the crew. She has been chartered for 18 months by the Texas Oil Company, at the rate of 8s 6d. , ; TANKER. CONSTRUCTION. , The twin-screw motor tanker Pjordaas, built at the Duetsche Werke, Kiel, for Mr Arnt J. Norland, of Arcndal, which has recently run trials. Is the first vessel built on Dr Danchort Smith’s system of three longitudinal bulkheads. This system Is the Invention of Dr Smith, of Messrs Arnesen, Christiansen and Smith, the well-known naval architects of Oslo, and has been developed by the Deutsche Werke. ‘ By the provision of two pump rooms and the hedessary number of coffer-dams, the vessel can carry at - least three different kinds of oil. - - - . , The principal dimensions of the vessel are; Length, 393 feet 9 Inches; breadth, 60 feet; depth, 34 feet. She is built to Lloyd’s special survey and has a capacity of 11,010 tons on summer freeboard. The propelling machinery consists of two single-acting four-cycle eight-cylinder Diesel engines, supplied by the Deutsche Werke, and developing 3200 h.p. at 155 r.p.m. During the trials the contract speed was considerably exceeded, a speed of 12.3 knots being attained with an engine output of -3060 h.p.' The oil consumption was 168 grams per h.p. per hour. The auxiliary machinery is partly steam and partly Diesel driven, and includes three steam-driven pumps of 325 tons per hour capacity each. It Is claimed for the new system of construction that It not only makes the vessel stronger and more stable, but that the weight is reduced, as Is shown by the fact that the capacity of the Fjordaas was expected to be only 10,750 tons deadweight. The Pjordaas has been chartered by the Eagle Oil and Shipping Company, Ltd., London, for a period of 10 years. r. , .
