COMMUNIST CONVICTS

A RIOT AT BARCELONA ATTEMPT TO BURN PRISON. BARCELONA, September 2. Communist convicts at Barcelona prison precipitated ■ a remarkable riot, which culminated in setting fire to the prison. While the commissioner and other officials were visiting the gaol in an endeavour to end a hunger strike which began last week, a large group of convicts, without warning, surrounded the officials, while 500 others gathered in the courtyard. Some broke into the infirmary and returned with supplies of petrol and furniture from the warders’ apartments, which they set on fire, and then set fire to the printing shop and storage rooms. Mounted machine gun sections hurriedly arrived and overwhelmed the prisoners before they had time to erect barricades. Fire brigades quelled the, blaze.
