PENINSULA COUNTY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held at Portobello yesterday, and was attended by the chairman (Cr H. Macandrew) and Crs J. Miller, J. Cross, W. D. Stewart, J. T. Irvine, W. D. Allen, R. Brunton, and D. J. Robertson. CORRESPONDENCE. J. Jackson Purdie wrote requesting that improvements be effected to the Camp road from the main road to the front gate of his property.—lt was decided to reply that no funds were available for the work at present. A letter was received from W. Wilman, Broad Bay, protesting against the state of the Camp road through the Castle trees. It required to be metalled, and the water tables needed cleaning out. while a culvert would also be necessary for drainage purposes.—Referred to Cr Robertson and the engineer to inspect the road., A letter was received from the inspector of stock, Dunedin, regarding the clearing of gorse on the roadline in Dunoon township. It appeared to the writer that the gorse should be cleared either by the Marine Department or by the local authority. Should a fire take place there, it was very probable that the maerocarpa hedges 'adjoining would be endangered, and perhaps the house properties. The work could probably be done by the unemployed, although sec-tion-owners were responsible for the distance to the middle of the road adjoining their properties.—Referred to the local members and the engineer.

The secretary of the Portobello and Broad Bay Ratepayers’ Association wrote requesting that the embankment above the new footpath at Portobello be sown down in grass as soon as possible.— It was decided to have the grass sown. M. Canton, Macandrew Bay, applied for permission to install a septic tank on his property.—Approved.

A letter was received from J. P. Wilson, Lower Portobello, asking that improvements be carried out before the summer to the Gravesend road, between Idour’s corner and Mrs Dick’s property. —Left to Cr Cross and the engineer, with power to act. The Main Highways Board forwarded a circular tendering information regarding the replacement of bridges on main highways.—Received.

A further circular was received from the Main Highways Board stating that it had decided to increase the standard rate of subsidy for maintenance work to £3 for £1 during the present financial year. The increase would aate from April 1, 1931, and applied to secondary as well as primary highways, and also to main high-ways in-- boroughs.—Received.

F. and R. Clearwater, Hooper’s Inlet, wrote requesting that the drains and culverts be cleaned out on the road adjoining their properties.—Referred to the engineer to have the work done. A letter • was received from James M'Guire, requesting that obstructions in Arthur’s walk, Waverley, should be removed.—lt was decided to request the owner of the adjoining property to remove the obstructions referred to. A circular was received from the Waimea County Council, Nelson, regarding rating on Grown lands. The council was endeavouring to have legislation enacted so that, when the Government acquired land, either through purchase or through it falling into the Government’s hands on account of the default of its legislators, the land should be liable for local rates on the same valuation as if the properties were privately owned. The support of the Peninsula Council in the matter was invited. —It was decided to support the application. Messrs Moore, Moore, and Nichol wrote on behalf of a client, requesting that steps should be taken to deal with a bank that was slipping in front, of a residence at Broad Bay.—Received, the matter to be looked into.

H. F. M'Taggart and A. W. G. Brown, Broad Bay, wrote drawing attention to the unsatisfactory state of the road leading to their properties.—Referred to the engineer, with power to act. J. Cadzon, jun., Anderson's Bay, wrote complaining that there was an unsightly deposit of rubbish below the soldiers’ monument at Highcliff.—Received. FINANCE. Accounts totalling £1045 12s 4d were passed for payment. RANGER’S REPORT. The ranger reported that seven cows and one horse had been found wandering on the county roads during the month.—Approved.
