FRENCH CONVICTS

ESCAPE FROM DEVIL’S ISLAND SIX DROWNED IN STORM. PARIS, September 3. (Received Sept. 3, at 7 p.m.) The story of the escape of 12 convicts from Devil’s Island is related in a letter received by a relative of an ex-prisoner who was sentenced to imprisonment for 20 years for robbery. He and 11 others escaped while working in a jungle, and they struggled for 15 days through dense undergrowth, enduring great hardships, living on berries and menaced by wild beasts. Eventually they reached the coast and commandeered two rowing boats. One capsized in a storm, six of the men being drowned., but the six others reached Venezuela, where they have hopes of obtaining their freedom.
