THE RAILWAY SERVICE
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —The letter in this morning’s issue of the Daily Times by “Lest We Forget” calls for many other remarks concerning unfairness in connection with Hillside workers. A person with a good full-time job receives a free house with lighting and heating, because he is custodian of the Social Hall. This surely is worth another 30g or more bn his wages. Is this fair to so many , semi-disabled exservice men and unemployed in our midst? This matter should receive the attention of the Returned Soldiers' Assoam, etc.. Outsider.
[Upon inquiry we are informed that in consideration of occupying the premises set aside for the custodian, free of rent and, lighting charges, the custodian is responsible for keeping the premises, including the Social Hall, library, apprentices’ instruction rooms, and ladies retiring room, in thoroughly clean condition and for seeing that the whole building is securely locked up after-each Occupation. The .1 custodian - is an employee in the Workshops, and the, premises he occupies Comprise twhiSmalT rooms 'arid bathroom above . the L-Sbbial Etdl. He provides his own and spoking,- Tacilities. In the cifi&uriiStfinces. 'itr is necessary that .the department. The arrangement,'which was made some years ago, is regarded as themost satisfactory from the department s point of view.-— Ed. O.D.T.]
