MANCHESTER UNITY

The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Centenary Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in the Wesley Street Hall, South Dunedin, on Monday evening, the N.G. Bro. E. Harrison presiding. The attendance at the 'meetings this year has been very encouraging to the officers, and the large muster of members and visiting brethren on Monday evening showed that interest in the affairs of the lodge is being maintained. Correspondence was received and business of a routine nature dealt with, the meeting adjourning at 8 o’clock. The remainder of the evening was devoted to the entertainment of lady friends, A progressive euchre tournament was held, and the popularity of these evenings was evident tty the large number of lady visitors. The officers had some difficulty in providing accommodation for the players, extra tables and seats having' to be procured. After an interesting contest, prizes were awarded to the winners, as follow: —Ladies, Mrs Mowatt; men, Bro. Armstrong. Supper was handed round, and before the close of the evening P.G. Bro. W. M'Allan, on behalf of the lodge, thanked the ladies for their attendance, and expressed pleasure at the large gathering. The Loyal Albion Lodge met in the M. Hall, Stuart street, on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance of members. N.G. Bro. H. A. Penny was in the chair. The provincial corresponding secretary wrote with reference to entries for the Sligo Scholarship. The corresponding secretary also forwarded details _ of the recommendations of a .committee which had met to consider the granting of relief to members who fall into arrears owing to unemployment, etc. This recommended that a vigilance committee of not less than five members be set up from each lodge, with a view to investigating cases which claimed attention. A strong committee was thereupon appointed from the lodge. The secretary of Loyal Princess Mary Lodge wrote extending an invitation to a card evening on Tuesday next, and it was decided to pay an official visit on this occasion. The secretary of the Loyal Albion . Juvenile Lodge wrote thanking the parent lodge for defraying the expenses of the juvenile members to Milton to enable them to take part in the annual initiation competition. The lodge, which has been established only 10 months, gained fourth place in the competition. A cordial welcome was extended to P.G.s Bros. A. J. and S. Smith, who had been on the sick list for some time After business matters had been disposed of, lady friends were entertained at a card evening, the prize winners being:—Mrs Scoones I, Mrs Cumberbeach 2, Miss Hill 3. The Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance of members, over whom the N. Bro. W. G. Parker presided. Advice was received from the corresponding secretary regarding the half-yearly district meeting this month. The major portion of the evening was spent in a debate on the subject, tc Which Has Done More for Mankind. Art or Literature?” P.G Bro. C. Hunt spoke on art, while Bro. Armstrong upheld the claims of literature. A pleasant hour was spent in debate, and at the close P.P.G.M. Bro. J. H. F. Hamel, who acted as judge, congratulated both teams on the excellent manner in which the subject had been handled; and also offered some useful advice for future debates. Two propositions for membership were recoil ed during the meeting.
