UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

UNEXPENDED ALLOCATIONS A DIFFICULT POSITION FURTHER REPRESENTATIONS TO BOARD -The local Unemployment Committee Is continuing to make representations to the Unemployment Board to allow balances of allocations, unexpended in ■wet weather, to be carried on to meet the expenses of a' subsequent week. The committee has forwarded the following resolution to the Unemployment Commissioner (Mr Malcolm Fraser), and to all local members of Parliament:— “That, whereas the allocations for each week are already, below the amount necessary to give adequate employment to eligible men, and therefore it will' bo practically imposs’ble to mat up the time lost ov !ng to wet weather in any week but of the allocations for the succeeding weeks, the Unemployment Bor 1 be requested to reconsi' I '"* its decision.” The committee’s communication addr : “ The position appears to be that men are solely dependent upon tlv» condition of the weather for relief work, and under your ruling it is possible that should bad weather be experienced for a whole week men would get no .work at all, and the allocation would be lost, in that it could not be taken advantage of. The committee considers that this deci sion creates an unfair and totally unacceptable situation,'and asks that you be good enough to place the matter before the board for further consideration at your'earliest convenience.”

RELIEF TO EX-SOLDIERS' The Unemployment Commissioner advised that the Dunedin Unemployment Committee’s views in regard to soldiers’ pensions, Vin so far as they affect the allocation of relief work, have been received. The reply is as follows: “ I ,have to state that the committee’s suggestion that such pensions should not her regarded as income in the same way as r are otherpensions ' has' < been noted, The board regrets, however, that it is unable to authorise 'any discrimination between soldiers and other. pensioners when, .the, eligibility of applicants for relief is being determined.’’ ' WORK FOR TO-DAY The following groups will commence work at 8 a.m. to-day: — Works Department. —2, Cavershiam Valley road and Lindsay road; 3, North road at Cleghorn street (near Bennett’s nursery) ; 4, Black Head road and Concord road (Taieri County); 6, Booth road and Fulton road; 11, intersection Gardner street and Elgin road; 12, intersection William street and Stafford street; 13, intersection Abbotsford road and Somerville street; 14, intersection William and Stafford street;. 16,' Patmos avenue (off Leith Valley road); 17, intersection Tainui road and Dundonald street; 18, intersection Wharf street and French street; 19, intersection Tainui road and,Dundonald street; 20, Leith Valley (above Stoney Ford); 46, intersection Wharf street and French street; 47, intersection Forfar street and Glen avenue; 49, Pine Hill road and Campbell road.
