ECONOMY IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— The need for drastic curtailment of public expenditure was sufficiently recognised by the Government when it agreed to set up an Economy Committee at Wellington. \ This I; committee is to make a searching investigation : of public service costs and of the relationship of banking interests_ to‘ our primary and secondary industries and trading concerns. Its report may well. be epochal, and it was therefore with regret that I read a letter: by “Vigilante” in your Monday’s issue, in which certain , departments of the State were singled out for adverse comment. Would it not be as well to allow the committee to carry out its thankless task without bias, and with fairness to all?, To my mind, much still remains for the geological survey to carry out. For instance, an ’intensive survey of the Wajkaia, Nevis, Moonlight, Shotover, and Tuapeka fields ,would, I am confident, yield results-of incalculable benefit to the gold; mining industry of Otago.—l am, etc. James Park.
