BALCLUTHA, September 2 HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors last night was attended by all the members with the exception of Messrs Roy and P. Watt. Mr D. Marshall occupied the chair. It was stated that application for the position of principal (rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr John Reid) would close on September 30, and would be considered at the next meeting of the board. The Education Department, Wellington, wrote confirming the board’s suggestion that Mr Reid be given six months’ leave of absence on full pay. The department further pointed out that, a teacher was entitled to this after 35 years’ service, the period to be shortened only by the number of days’ sick leave the teacher had had during, his whole term of serviced —A member pointed out that in Mr Reid’s 42 years of service as a teacher he had only been off for half a day other than the usual holidays, and that was on the occasion of the burial of a near relative. The acting-principal (Mr E. Pearce) requested that the board purchase ,a set of gramophone records of Mendelssohn’s “ Elijah ” for use in connection with the daily school prayers.—Agreed to. THE WEATHER. The weather during the week has been very wet, although to-day shows a slight improvement.
