CAR AND CYCLE THEFTS
AN ORGANISED SCHEME OFFENDERS PLACED ON PROBATION. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 11. An astounding story of motor car conversions and motor cycle thefts was told in the Police Court to-day when four young men appeared. After stealing the machines they dismantled them, and the various parts were produced, making the court look like a mechanic’s workshop. John Foley, aged 21, Thomas Henry Foley, aged 19, Graham Wilfred Morten, aged 20, and George Morton were each sentenced to three years’ probation for the theft of a motor cycle valued at £45, and were convicted and discharged on several of the other charges. The police said there had been a lot of car stealing in the Mount Eden district, but since the arrests of the young men there had been very few reports of stolen cars. One of the accused bad a bunch of car keys when arrested. The magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) said they were all extremely lucky to get probation; they deserved three years in the Borstal.
