SOUTHLAND BEATS WAIRARAPA TWENTY-THREE POINTS TO SIXTEEN. (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, August 5. The representative match between Wairarapa and Southland, played here to-day, resulted in a win for Southland by 23 points to 16. The weather was fine, the sky overcast, and the ground on the heavy side. Southland did most of the attacking in the first spell, but made too many mistakes when in a scoring position. The game was much faster and brighter in the second spell, when the visitors came with a rattle, and scored 10 points in as many minutes. Southland had the lion’s share of the ball throughout,, but frequently fell into error, sometimes when the defence was completely beaten. Southland opened the scoring when from a line out the Maroons gained possession, and after Townsend, Purdue, and Agnew had handled the last-named scored in a handy position. Niven failed to convert Southland nearly scored again a few minutes later when the backs afad forwards took part in a great passing movement which was held up a few yards short of the line. Stringfellow was prominent in a solo effort which took play to Southland’s twenty-five, where the Maroons were penalised, and Fitzgerald kicked a goal from- right in front, making the scores 3 all.

Southland launched a strong offensive, but mistakes in handling spoilt what chances the home team had of scoring. Wairarapa was penalised inside its own twenty-five, and Niven placed a goal, making the half-time scores: Southland 6. Wairarapa 3. , Within three minutes of resumption Ussher slipped round the side of a scrum near the Wairarapa line and scored, and Niven converted.

Southland was getting all over the visitors, and after a series of attacks’ Metcalfe got over, but the kick at goal failed. Ussher again dodged across the line, but lost 'the ball. A magnificent movement from halfway, in which the Maroon backs and forwards took part, ended in Gedcles crossing at the corner. The kick missed. Wairarapa retaliated, and from a line out Clark cut in and handed to Stringfellow, who scored, and Fitzgerald kicked a fine goal. Five more points came to the visitors a couple of minutes later when M’Gregor dived over between the posts and Fitzgerald converted. The Greens were going much better, and were nearly over again. Southland cleared and swept to the other end of the field, where Donnelly scored after a great piece of dribbling. No goal resulted. The Southland backs combined effectively in snappy passing, and Crosbie shot across, but the try was not converted. Shortly before the end Fitzgerald kicked a penalty goal for Wairarapa, making the final scores: — Southland 23 points. Wairarapa .. .. I<s points. BUSH DEFEATS DANNEVIRKE r (Per United Press Association.) PAHIATUA, August 5. Bush retained the Bebbington Shield by defeating Dannevirke by 14 points to nil. The first spell was very even, and was confined purely to the forwards, who were well matched. The Bush vanguard dominated practically the whole of the second spell, and wore down the defence, allowing the backs to round off with pretty movements. Golvin, the Bush rover, was the outstanding player on the ground, and was responsible for several clever tries. Mahoney and S. Olliver were in the picture all the way. Tries for Bush were scored by Aitcheson, Hope, Wolland, and Reeves. Mabey converted one of the tries. ST. ANDREW’S DEFEATS M’GLASHAN , (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 5, In the annual match St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, beat John M’Glashan College, Dunedin, by 43 points to 5.
