Stanwood Menken in New York lately, when she was robbed of jewels valued at £30,000. Mrs Menken is famous for her jewellery, which she displays spectacularly at social events. At 10 a.m. a man called at her 'New York home with a box of flowers, and while a woman servant was signing a receipt, two other men appeared, armed with revolvers, and forced their way into the house. Before going upstairs the men collected the servants and an upholsterer working in the house, bound them, stuck adhesive tape*over their mouths, and locked them in a small room. Then/ they awakened Mrs Menken and forced her, with three revolvers levelled at her, to get up and open the wall safe in w r hich her jewels were locked. They took everything and departed.
