YORKSHIRE’S WOMEN
“ OUTSIZES » IN CLOTHES. Are there /no're women with outsize figures in Yorkshire than in other parts of England? this question has arisen as a result of a protest made by Mr J. H. Waddington, of Halifax, who at the Drapers’ Chamber of Trade in London recently opposed the standardising of women’s garments. The vice-president of the chamber declared that there would be trouble If the standard size of garments for London was applied to the Yorkshire women. A Yorkshire women’s outfitter said that Yorkshire women would certainly dislike being made “ outsize ” by any standardisation based on the measurements of London women. “ Yorkshire women, generally, are bigger-boned than their southern counterparts, but under the present standards' only a small percentage need ‘ outsize ’ garments. If a new system were to be adopted, based on the measurements of London women—who. most Yorkshire women would ' complain, are too thin- - the number of people who would have to ask for ‘ outsize ’ garments will increase tremendously. And every woman detests the word 1 outsize.’ ” Another Yorkshire woman suggested that the word “ outsize ” was undignified in any case, and that, if some standardisation were intended, this word should be discarded and some more womanly term adopted.
