GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. T. Smellie), and Crs G. Orange, T. Tomkins, J. T. Barnes, T. D. Webster, P. Winders, J. Harvey, J. Lindsay, T. M'Ahan and A. Logie. FINANCE. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr Tomkins) stated that £2343 of the total rates struck had been paid by July 30. which was striking evidence of the advantage that was being taken of the discount of 5 per cent, allowed for prompt payment. The amount collected represented 45 per cent, of the total rates struck, which was very satisfactory considering the prevailing economic conditions. Accounts amounting to £B9O were passed for payment. WORKS' COMMITTEE. On the recommendation of the Works Committee, it was decided to form an entrance from Binnie street to the property of Mr D. W. MThail. After considering, on the recommendation of the Works Committee, the question of chargiiig for house connections to storm water drains, it was decided, when the main sewer is constructed, -to make a general charge on all householders for connections to the sewer.

It was decided, on the recommendation of the Works Committee, to place ashes at the entrance to Mr O. Basse's property in Henry street. The Works Committee submitted a petition from residents of Abbotsford protesting against the closing of Runciman street, and reported that the engineer’s estimate of the cost of reopening the street would be £2OOO. The committee recommended that a footpath should be formed in Runciman street from the main road to Neil street. —The recommendation was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) reported as follows: The only work done on the DunedinInvercargill section of the highway since last report has been the repairs to the guard fence on Look-out Point section. The weather has been too cold to effect repairs to the tSir-sealed portion, but •the incoming month should enable the repairs to be carried out. Some toppings were obtained for the Green IslandTaieri Mouth highway, and with the use of the power grader this section is in good order. The principal work engaging the permanent hands was the attention to the footpaths. The work consisted of spreading toppings for which 255 cubic yards were used, costing £146 12s 6d. Neville .street, near Prosser street, has been completed by the spreading of screenings. In Burns street the surface of the roadway has been renewed, which became necessary after the drainage works. Several crossings over footpaths have been made, and the foreman has still in hand the inspection of all crossings in the borough. The works carried out under the No. 5 unemployment scheme durinp the month have been those connected with drainage, with the exception of the extension of the south-west abutment of Runciman street bridge. All the drainage work has been permanently laid, with the exception of the connections to the existing storm water drains. Work on the North Taieri road has been completed, and gratings have been connected for storm water and the roadway repaired. The work in George street was probably the heaviest undertaking for some time, and necessitated the laying of a drain throughout the length of George street from Shand street to Muir street. The work.has been finally completed and the roadway repaired. The rearrangement of the discharge in Derby street into one channel has been completed, and the sewer has been extended on the east Boundary to pick up sewage from the adjoining houses. The drainage work in Alexander street has been completed. and connections have been made from adjoining houses. The 12in pipe culvert which takes a considerable amount of drainage from the north and west has been opened out and a mud tank over the invert and proper connections for storm water have been made. A crossing is being made over the footpath for a motor lorrv. • GENERAL. Cr Webster brought up the question of fire protection in the borough, and on his motion it was decided that the town clerk be instructed to go into the cost of providing several hoses and hydrants at various localities in the borough. It was decided that the Mayor and the chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr Tomkins) should wait on the chief postjnaster, Dunedin, and make personal representations to him with regard to postal facilities at the Green Island Post Office. A letter was received from the Milton District Unemployment ‘Committee requesting the council to support a protest to the Prime Minister against unemployment funds being expended on the construction of tourist roads, and urging that those funds should be spent instead on improving country roads in settled districts. —It was decided to support the protest.
