WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last evening in the Council Chambers, Ravensbourne, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr T. H. Harridge), Crs J. M. Kay, J. Robb, A. D. Asher, G. J. Hayward, T. F. Rodger, W. Forgie, F. W. .Venn, E. J. Taylor, and A. Smith. The borough engineer advised that the total amount expended on the DunedinPort Chalmers highway from April 1 to June 30 was £778 4s XOd. Six ratepayers of London streefy Ravensbourne, petitioned the council with a request to consider • the question of cutting through the street to connect , . ; with Athol place. The ratepayers would assist the council financially to the best of their ability. At -the present time the six ratepayers were prepared to subscribe £22 towards the cost of the work. —Referred to the Works Committee. The Works Committee recommended that the application of the Waikouaiti County Council for 100 yards of metal to be spread on the Sawyers’ Bay road be granted. The committee expressed its appreciation of the offer made by several residents to assist financially certain work in London street, and recommended that , y. the work be proceeded with as soon as -J the payment of the ratepayers’ subsidy had been made. The committee also N recommended that two loads of rubble be spread at the foot of Ellen street.— The chairman of the committee (Cr Kay) said that the council intended, if the report was adopted, to put London street in good order. —The Mayor said he was pleased to know that improvements would be carried ,out in London street, as the time was not far distant when the street would be one of the main thoroughfares in the .borough.—Cr Kay stated that it was a precedent for the council to receive the subsidy from ratepayers before any street work was started.The report was adopted. • The borough inspector reported that the trees in District road, Roseneath, had keen cut hack, and the road .between the railway station and Roseneath had freceived attention. The trees at the St. Leonards school had been cut down. Men were now employed cleaning up Ellen street and forming a footpath. The Main road near the quarry had been raised and improved, and repairs carried out in London street, A start had been made,to construct a footpath from Black Jack’s Pointto the Dunedin boundary. The Harbour Board had given permission to the council to place theience back-for a distance!.of three feet. Improvements had been carried out in various other streets in the district. —The report was approved. The Water Committee recommended that no furrther action be taken by the . council in connection with the proposed water supply for Burkes, and St. in the meantime.—ln speaking to the report, Cr Venn said the project had been placed before the ratepayers very clearly at the first meeting. Very little enthusiasm had been shown at the second meeting held-between the Water Committee, the engineer,,and the residents concerned, and the committee had decided not to proceed any further with the project in the meantime. —The report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the month amounted to £535 5s lOd, and that accounts amounting to £739 ,6s had been .passed for payment. After the accounts had been -paid there would be a debit balauce of £1694 'Bs lid. —The report yyas adopted.
