THE MATAKANUI IRRIGATION SCHEME
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I have read many letters in the Daily Times about economy and unemployment, etc. I would like to draw the public’s attention to the Matakanui irrigation scheme, the secretary of which is paid a salary of £SO a year—-almost fl a week for writing out the bills twice a year and attending a very occasional meeting. If the raceman were paid £lO extra he would be quite sufficiently paid to act as secretary. Last season the farmers and runholders had to clean the Devonshire race out at their own expense, as the company did not have sufficient money to pay to have it cleaned out. If the extra £4O were paid to some of the unemployed to clean the races out it would be a great deal more sensible.—l am, etc.. Economy. [The payment last year' of £SO to the secretary of the Matakanui Irrigation Sheme covered, two years’ service. The secretary has acted since the initiation of the scheme when there was a consideramount of clerical work to 'be done. — Ed. O.D.T]
