MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE The annual meeting of the members of the Port Chalmers Mechanics’ Institute and the Athenaeum was held on Monday evening. The president (Mr K. G. Roy) was chairman. The annual report showed a slight increase in membership. In presenting the report, the chairman urged all members to endeavour to obtain more sub scribers, in order to place the institute on a better financial footing.
The statement presented by the treasurer (Mr C. N. M'Donald) showed a credit balance at the end of the year's operations. The election of officers for the bnsuing, year resulted as follows:—President, Mr K. G. Roy. treasurer, ,Mr C. N., M‘Donald (re-elected); committeer-Rev. W. H. Roberts, Captain J. E. Page, Messrs G. Wilkin, S. Jack, and D. Forsyth, together with the appointees of the Borough Council, Messrs 0. E. Loll and G. F. Mirams. Mr. J. H. Crawford was re-elected auditor and thanked for his past services. It was decided to alter the list of magazines and periodicals, which are subscribed to by the institute, and kept on the tables in the public reading room in order to make them more up to date. The chairman stated that the institute was a valuable asset to the town, and should be more whole-heartedly supported by the public. About 80 , new works of travel and fiction had been added to the lending department during the year, and it was hoped to be able to purchase a greater number during the coming year. Any suggestions from members would be carefully considered by the committee.
