NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

RELIEF WORKS. Unemployed men in the district have been engaged by the Peninsula County Council iu carrying out improvement work iu various parts of North-East Harbour. The men have been principally engaged in widening roads and removing sharp road corners in the North-East Harbour Riding. The improvements made are very noticeable. NEW SCHOOL BUILDINGS. The new North-East Harbour School is nearing completion, the contractors having made good progress during the past few weeks. The school is a very fine structure, and will be a decided acquisition to the district. The school occupies a site in the centre of the Macandrew Bay township, and will provide easy access for the children. The grounds have been ploughed and are now being laid ‘but. It is expected that the school will be ready for occupation after the term holidays in September. RUSSELL’S JETTY REMOVAL. The task of removing Russell’s jetty, which was commenced by the Harbour Board some weeks ago, has been completed, and an old land and water mark has disappeared for all time. PERSONAL. Mr D. Stallard, who has resided in the Macandrew Bay district for many years is about to leave for Christchurch. His departure will be regretted, as he has been a prominent resident in musical circles, and held the position of organist of the Macandrew Bay Presbyterian Church. ’ REMOVAL OF GUM TREES. When the strong gale occurred on June 23 several gum trees on the hillside at Colinswood were uprooted. The trees were a menace, and have since been removed by the Peninsula County Council with unemployed labour. Other gum trees which were affected by the gale and which appeared to be dangerous to vehicular traffic and pedestrians have also boon removed. CHURCH BAZAAR. A very attractive bazaar was recently held at Macandrew Bay under the auspices of (he Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild. The bazaar was a great success, a substantial sum being raised to augment the church funds.
